Mid-Ceremony Proposal Earns Northwestern Student Doctorate, Fiancée

The graduation ceremony slideshow included a message asking the woman to marry him.

It was a love affair that started in thermodynamics class.

Bin Liu was a teaching assistant in the class at Northwestern University two years ago when he met Jie Han, a graduate student, according to an article in TribLocal. So it seems fitting — and awesome — that he chose to propose to her last week in the middle of his doctoral hooding.

Liu walked to the edge of the stage and got on one knee, holding the open ring box. Han, who was wearing her purple gown from her separate master’s degree ceremony, walked down to the front and, after a moment, the two embraced.

Han arranged with the school ahead of time to slip a slide into the slideshow that was playing during the ceremony, TribLocal reports. It said, “Jie Han will you Marry Me.”
