How To Stay Safe This Winter

So far, this year’s winter in Chicago has not been mild by any means. According to The Weather Channel, Chicago spent 37 hours at the beginning of January in below-0 temperatures. With snow and ice in the mix of all these low temperatures, Chicago-area residents need to take extra measures to stay safe this year. Here are a few ways those living in Joliet can stay safe:

Tips for winter safety

  • Take your time getting to your destination and allow extra time during inclement weather. Whether you’re walking or driving, go at the speed that feels safe.
  • Wear boots with traction on the bottom. These will help your feet the grip the ground in icy patches. Placing “grippers” on the bottom of your shoes may also help.
  • Watch where you’re walking. Many lawyers that concentrate on slip and fall cases see people who may not have seen an icy patch and, consequently, became injured. Avoid uncommon walkways, sidewalks and steps that have not yet been iced.
  • Make sure if you are driving, your windshield, as well as any other windows and lights, are adequately cleared so your vision is not obstructed in any way while driving.
  • Refrain from using four-wheel drive on icy patches; it may cause your car to overturn more easily.
  • Apply brakes gently when in icy patches. When you slam the brakes, your car is more likely to slide and skid.
  • If you do hit an icy patch, take your foot off the gas pedal and switch to neutral before braking to avoid swerving.

If you think you should have received protection from the effects of the cold weather, you may want to consult a personal injury lawyer in Chicago. If you were walking on an icy sidewalk that caused you to slip and fall, a lawyer could help you receive justice.
