NorthShore University HealthSystem Foundation Honors Two Endowed Chairs

On Tuesday, June 11, NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore) Foundation hosted an Investiture Ceremony recognizing two esteemed physician scientists in new endowed chairs. The endowed chairs represent the highest level of prestige at academic medical institutions, and the chair holders are honored for their excellence in care, research and medical education. Jay L. Goldstein, MD, Vice Chairman of Medicine and Division Head of Gastroenterology and John M. Lee, MD, PhD, Attending Pathologist and Residency Program Director in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine were lauded by 110 donors, physicians, care providers and administrative leaders during the Ceremony, which celebrated the work of the honorees and recognized the generous donors who make it possible.  

 

“These honorees join an elite group of the finest physicians-scientists in the nation,” said Mark R. Neaman, NorthShore’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “We are extremely grateful for the generosity and vision of our donors who have made this recognition possible. Their support enables NorthShore to continue to be successful in our mission to preserve and improve human life.”

The ceremony commenced with Dr. Goldstein being invested in the Roy F. Kehl Chair of Gastroenterology. Prior to joining NorthShore, Dr. Goldstein was Professor of Medicine and Vice Head for Clinical Affairs in the Department of Medicine, Section of Digestive Diseases and Nutrition at the University of Illinois at Chicago. His professional accolades include being elected Governor of the American College of Gastroenterology for three consecutive terms, serving on the Educational Committee of the American Gastroenterological Association and as an elected Councillor for the Gastroenterology Research Group. He also initiated and developed “Outcomes Research for Gastroenterologists,” a national educational course that develops clinical research competencies for young investigators, which has been attended by more than 1,000 trainees over the past 15 years.

The group then enjoyed the investiture of Dr. Lee in the Board of Directors/Ivan S. Ciric, MD, Chair of Neurosciences. Dr. Lee recently joined NorthShore’s Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine bringing with him the experience of a distinguished career in neuropathology, gained at Massachusetts General Hospital and Loyola University Medical Center, where he established the Loyola University Brain Bank, a regional resource for neuroscientists which houses samples to be used in the study of Alzheimer’s Disease and the effects of aging on the human central nervous system. He is a member of The American Association of Neuropathologists, and has held many leadership positions within the organization. Additionally, he is a member of the Society for Neuroscience, American Association for the Advancement of Science, College of American Pathology and the Medical and Scientific Advisory Board of the Chicago Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.
