NorthShore University HealthSystem hospitals named to "Leapfrog Top Hospitals" 2013 List

Evanston and Glenbrook Hospitals meet criteria on national assessment of hospital quality, safety

NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore) Evanston and Glenbrook Hospitals have again been rated “Top Hospitals” by The Leapfrog Group.  Both were among 90 hospitals selected from a field of more than 1,300 hospitals nationally based on the results of the Leapfrog Group’s annual hospital survey, which measures performance on patient safety and quality.

“We are honored to again be designated a Leapfrog “Top Hospital” and believe it is indicative of the high-quality care delivered by our physicians and staff across our entire system,” said Sean O’Grady, President of NorthShore Glenbrook Hospital.  “We take very seriously our goals on quality and patient safety, and the Leapfrog award validates the efforts of everyone at NorthShore University HealthSystem.”

A record number of 1,324 hospitals participated in The Leapfrog Group’s annual survey this year. The list includes 22 Top Rural Hospitals, 55 Top Urban Hospitals and 13 Top Children’s Hospitals.  NorthShore hospitals, which are considered urban hospitals, were among just five Illinois hospitals to earn the designation.

Leapfrog’s annual hospital survey measures hospitals’ performance on patient safety and quality, focusing on three critical areas of hospital care: how patients fare, resource use, and management structures in place to prevent errors.  The results of the survey are posted at http://www.leapfroggroup.org/cp.

“The field of hospitals considered for this year’s elite Leapfrog Top Hospital distinction was more competitive than ever,” said Leah Binder, President & CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “By achieving the Top Hospital accolade, NorthShore has demonstrated exemplary performance across all areas of quality and patient safety that are analyzed on the Leapfrog Hospital Survey.”

One requirement to be designated a Top Hospital is that the facility earned an ‘A’ grade in Leapfrog’s semi-annual Hospital Safety Scores.  All four NorthShore hospitals – Evanston, Glenbrook, Highland Park and Skokie – earned ‘A’ grades when they were announced earlier this fall.
