Evanston Obituary: Inez Kerr, 88

She grew up in Jamaica, moved to England, then settled in Evanston in the late '60s.

The following obituary is from Donnellan Family Funeral Services:

Inez Deloris Malcolm was born on August 14th 1925 to Luna Morgan and Nathaniel Malcolm in Brownshall St. Catherine Jamaica. In her parish of Jamaica, she was affectionately known as “Lady”. Inez was the oldest of eight siblings, which included five younger sisters and twin brothers. Inez attended school in the Parish of St. Catherine and after she finished school, she became a single parent. As a result of the financial climate, many Jamaicans left the island to secure a better life and Inez was no exception. In the late 50’s, Inez migrated to London, England to work. In London, she met and married George Edward Kerr, who worked with the railroad. During their marriage, they had one son, Colin Lloyd Kerr. In 1968, the Kerr family moved to the United States to live. They resided in Evanston, Illinois.

Shortly after their arrival, Inez adapted quickly and acquired a job at North Shore Uniform Services. She worked there for over thirty years while simultaneously working with a prominent family on the North Shore on the weekends. Her faith led her to join Sherman United Methodist Church in the early 70’s and she remained a member for over thirty years. Once again, Inez became a single parent, but she had incredible inner strength. Her relentless determination, resiliency, un-denying fortitude, and tenacity would allow her to raise her youngest son alone and put him through college.

As years went by, she was affectionately known as “Ma” and “Nez” to her close family and friends. She leaves behind sisters and twin brothers; two sons Rupert Hendricks and Colin Kerr; two daughters-in-law: Gloria Hendricks and Kimberly Kerr; two grand daughters: Kaedene Williamson and Destiny Kerr; two grandsons: Khalin Kerr and Kendall Price; three great grand children: Patrene Williamson, Ashanti Williamson, and Daniel Williamson; and a host of extended family and loving friends.
