Schermerhorn & Co. Founder Dies at 84

John P. Schermerhorn began working in real estate in Evanston in 1953, after serving in the U.S. Army. He incorporated Schermerhorn & Co. in 1967 and served as chairman until his death Dec. 4.

John P. “Jack” Schermerhorn, born April 20, 1928, passed away December 4, 2012. Jack grew up in Chicago and Wilmette, graduating from St. George High School, Chicago, IL, and St. Mary’s College, Winona, MN. He is a veteran of the Army Finance Corps.

Jack started his career in the real estate business in 1953 and founded Schermerhorn & Co. in 1967. Jack was very proud to have his children involved in the business. He was a dedicated Realtor and President of the North Shore Board of Realtors, 1973; President of the Evanston Kiwanis Club, 1973; and a Past President of the Evanston Chapter of the Red Cross. Proud of his Dutch heritage, Jack was a member of the Chicago Chapter of the Holland Society of New York.

Beloved husband of Claire, nee Shondell for 59 years; loving father of Joan (Ron) Hoffman, John, Ellen Reed, Dan (Marianne), Bill (Jacquie) and Jim (Nelle); proud grandfather of Adam and Mark Steffen, Nicholas Reed, Maggie, Jack, Mitchell, Matthew, Tom, Luke and the late Clare Schermerhorn; dear brother of Sr. Mary Frances, O.S.B., Robert (the late Joan), Margaret, Thomas (Patricia), Nancy (the late Jack) Van Der Bosch, Richard (Patricia) and the late Harry (the late Liz); fond brother-in-law of Sr. Helen Shondell, IHM; and adored uncle of many nieces and nephews. Jack was also preceded in death by his parents Margaret, nee Farrow, and Harry Schermerhorn and his brother-in-law, Bob Shondell.

A visitation will be held Friday, December 7th from 4-8 pm at Kelley & Spalding Funeral Home, 1787 Deerfield Rd., Highland Park, IL. Family and friends will meet for funeral service Saturday, December 8th at 10am at St. Patrick Church, 991 Waukegan Rd., Lake Forest, IL. Interment St. Mary Cemetery, Lake Forest, IL. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Benedictine Sisters of Chicago, 7430 N. Ridge Blvd., Chicago, IL 60645 or to The Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, 610 W. Elm Ave., Monroe, MI 48162.
