Carrie Swearingen of Evanston lost her long battle with metastatic breast cancer on June 15, 2013. She is survived by her devoted husband, Stefano Mereu, and children, Matteo and Francesca Mereu––for whom she had an all-encompassing love. She is also survived by her mother, Natalie Swearingen, brother James (Michelle Markham) Swearingen, a nephew, three nieces, mother-in-law Maria Puliga Mereu and sister-in-law of Emanuela Mereu (both of Rome, Italy) and five Godchildren. Carrie grew up in Chicago’s Beverly neighborhood, attended Sheldon and Clissold Schools, Morgan Park Academy, Loyola Univ., and Illinois State Univ. She was a former executive at Fox Broadcasting Co., McGaw YMCA, and Catholic Extension before opening Swearingen Media in 2003. She wrote for more than 60 U.S. publications, having received national awards for her feature stories. With Geraldine Hemmings, she co-authored “As She Asks” for Fr. Jozo Zovko, which became a European bestseller in seven languages, all proceeds to 3700 orphans of war in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
