“Cash Cab” Hardly A Challenge for Evanston Residents

Evanston residents Sam Fleischacker and Amy Reichert and their son, Benji, found themselves in Chicago's Cash Cab.  In my opinion, they made Evanston PROUD.

Disclaimer: Sam and Amy are my neighbors and friends. When they emailed me recently, asking if I might record a Discovery Channel program for them, I was curious as to why. First of all, I’d never used my Comcast DVR before their request. Not only did I learn how to use it (and boy, is it easy), I also found out you can’t record a DVD from a DVR’d show (which bums me out). So, pathetically, I held my camcorder in my hand and recorded this ten-minute segment because I didn’t really have a choice.  Can someone please explain how I can record a DVR'd show?

According to Sam:

Amy is an architect and designer, with her own firm (Architecture + Design) in Chicago; I am a philosophy professor, focusing on moral and political philosophy, at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Benji is a junior at the Chicagoland Jewish High School, who plays the 'cello avidly and is a cross-country runner. [Daughter] Noa is in Israel, volunteering on a program that helps Ethiopian immigrants.

We've lived here for 12 years, and moved in large part because we wanted a "walking" city, with shops and fun things to do that one can reach on foot. We continue to like that, and love being so near the lake (I run along the lake, which is often the best part of my day, and we swim there a bit in the summer).

I'd like to see fewer tall office buildings in Evanston, and more good fruit and vegetable stores. When can we get a Trader Joe's?!

I agree with Sam on everything! Also, I love living in our rowhouse and in Nichols neighborhood because of the old-fashioned community feeling among neighbors! I'd also love to see more community gardening opportunities in Evanston …
