Pastor Young Calls for Community Responsibility for First Day Safety
Pastor Young says… “The first day of school is coming in the Chicago and Evanston areas, on Monday, August 26th. There have been murders and senseless violent acts along “Safe Passage” routes that have now alarmed parents and community activists. Though I do believe that law enforcement plays an important part in insuring safety as our children and teens travel to and from school, yet I must contend that we parents and adults in the community bear a responsibility in assuring community safety. I live in Evanston, Illinois and I am thankful for the involvement of community organizations like Peace Pioneers for Evanston, CeaseFire Rogers Park, and Peace Angels Rogers Park, who actively work toward peace and safety. Those who are able can also patrol safe passage routes, and be extra “Eyes & Ears” for law enforcement. The Evanston and Chicago Police Departments do a wonderful job, but can only do so much to curb local violence. The responsibility is ours, and the men and women of the community have a great authority in their very presence. The first day of school is very important. Those who attend the first day of school fare better academically, and first day attendance numbers effect federal and state school funding formulas. Responsible parents and citizens, let us commit to being present along safe passage routes on Monday morning and afternoon to also make a statement about our concern and commitment to making this a safe and successful school year.”
