27-Year-Old Killed in Chicago Ave. Car Accident

The accident happened early Sunday.

A 27-year-old Evanston man was killed at about 7 a.m. Sunday after his 2003 Nissan Altima had struck a tree and ejected him and a passenger from the car.

The passenger, also 27 and from Chicago, did not have any serious injuries, according to Evanston Police.

An email from Evanston Fire Chief Greg Klaiber to city officials said the passenger "suffered some lacerations to his head, but was conscious and oriented."

The men were driving southbound on Chicago Avenue, just south of south of South Blvd. The cause of the crash is currently under investigation, though police said it appeared that the driver and passenger were not wearing seat belts.

The man killed has been identified as dentified as Octavio Garcia-Martinez. He was pronounced dead approximately  45 minutes after the crash at St. Francis Hospital.
