7-Year-Old Hit By Speeding Driver on Oakton

A 7-year-old girl was crossing the street near Oakton Elementary School Thursday afternoon when she was hit by a car in the crosswalk.

A speeding driver struck a 7-year-old girl as she was crossing the street at Oakton Street and Barton Avenue around 4 p.m. Thursday.

Several witnesses told police that the girl was in the crosswalk with her brother when a car speeding westbound on Oakton ran into her. The accident took place just a block away from .

Evanston fire paramedics treated the girl on the scene for bruises, scrapes and a possible broken collar bone before taking her to St. Francis Hospital. Her brother was uninjured, police reported.

The driver, Yuriy Velikov, 50, of the 3000 block of Salem Walk in Northbrook, was issued citations for negligent driving and failure to yield to a pedestrian, according to police. 

Just four days ago, on Monday, at Main Street and St. Louis in Skokie. The driver, a 23-year-old woman from Skokie, has since been charged with felony aggravated driving under the influence.
