Police are saying a cyclist was hit by a Volkswagen sedan near Main Street and Skokie Boulevard on Thursday around 7 p.m.
The bicyclist, who was said to be in his "30's or 40's," is in critical condition, according to police. He was transported to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston shortly after the accident.
The vehicle that struck the cyclist was heading southbound on Skokie Boulevard, and, according to police, the driver did not sustain any injuries. At this time, it is unclear if the driver was intoxicated.
The Volkswagen sedan could be seen wrapped around a pole along a sidewalk on Skokie Boulevard, with the bicycle itself about two feet away from the vehicle.
Officers closed off an entire block while they investigated the accident and more than four squad cars were present. At about 8:15 p.m., police said the North Regional Major Crimes Task Force, or NORTAF, were en route to investigate the accident. NORTAF is typically called when serious or fatal accidents occur in the Chicagoland area.
