A 42-year-old man was arrested and charged with driving under the influence after he crashed his car into a parked public works vehicle Tuesday night, according to police.

Edward Crabbe, of the 9200 block of Springfield Avenue in Skokie, was driving his 2010 Jeep Liberty around midnight when he struck a city of Evanston truck at Central Street and Bennett Avenue, Police Cmdr. Jason Parrott told Patch. A city streets supervisor was sitting in the Ford F150 pickup blocking traffic for snow removal at the time, Parrott said.

Crabbe told police that his windshield had iced over, and he was trying to use antifreeze to remove the ice. He also said he did not see the city vehicle before he hit it, according to Parrott.

Police charged Crabbe with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and damage to city property, Parrott said. His car was towed after the accident.

The city streets supervisor went to the hospital after the accident for treatment of neck pain, according to Evanston public works director Suzette Robinson. He has since been released and is recovering well.
