Hearty Souls Take Polar Plunge Today

Three Evanston Police officers are among those raising money in this annual event for Special Olympics Illinois.

Three officers as well as about 300 other brave people will jump into Lake Michigan this afternoon to raise money for Special Olympics Illinois, according to the department.

The EPD team, dubbed the "Jailhouse Plungers," are part of the department's annual tradition of participating in the chilly fundraiser.

The plunge will happen at 1 p.m. at 's North Beach, where Lincoln Avenue meets the lake. Last-minute plungers are welcome. There's a minimum $75 in donations required to participate. An after party will be held at Praire Moon.

Funds raised today go to support programs for athletes with intellectual disabilities in Cook County and western DuPage county, according to Special Olympics Illinois.
