Evanston Police Arrest Car Burglary Suspect

A note from the EPD

From the Evanston Police Department:

On June 12 at approx. 7:15 p.m. the Evanston Police responded to a suspicious person call in the 800 block of Emerson St. A citizen had called police describing a subject who had ridden a bicycle into the area and after getting off the bicycle, entered an unlocked vehicle. The citizen felt the vehicle did not belong to the subject and subsequently called police.

Police were able to locate a subject matching the description who attempted to leave the area after observing police. The police officers on the scene were able to detain the subject, locate a witness who identified the subject stopped by police as the same subject who entered a vehicle. The vehicle was identified as 2003 Mercedes ML320 and the owner of the vehicle was then located and stated no one should have been in their vehicle.   The subject detained by police admitted to going into the vehicle and taking money from the vehicle.

Based on investigation performed by police, the subject was taken into custody and transported to the Evanston Police Department.

This subject was identified as Marcus A. Austin, age 22, from Chicago.  Austin was subsequently charged with Burglary and has an initial court appearance at the 2nd Municipal Court in Skokie on June 21, 2011 at 9 a.m.

The Evanston Police Department encourages citizens to report suspicious activity as in this particular case. If it was not for the citizen observing this suspicious behavior and calling police, this crime may have gone unsolved.
