Evanston Police Target Illegal Tobacco Sales

The department will be doing checks to reduce youth access to cigarettes and other smoking products.

The Evanston Police Department will partner with the the Illinois Liquor Control Commission to conduct "tobacco compliance checks" aimed at reducing the sale of tobacco products to youths.

"The checks will be conducted at tobacco retail establishments, which are licensed to sell tobacco products within the city limits," police officials said in a written statement.

The checks will run through the next few months.

"The participating establishments will be provided with tobacco retailer kits prior to implementing the enforcement component," officials said.  "The kits include a review of state minimum-age tobacco laws, required signage and training guides for their personnel.  In addition, each tobacco retailer will receive three compliance checks."

"Illinois is ranked seventh nationwide in tobacco retailer compliance rates," the statement read.
