UPDATED: Explosive Device Found at Evanston Police Outpost

The device was found on Saturday and a person of interest has been taken into custody, police said.

Update:

A spokesman for the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives told the Chicago Sun-Times that the man in custody is a 19-year-old who allegedly left the device and then called in the tip in order to collect a reward.

There were three police officers in the outpost at the time, and authorities said they believe the man acted alone. The device was left in a garbage can outside of the station.

Evanston police said an explosive device was found in back of their Howard Street outpost on Saturday. A person of interest in the case has been taken into custody and turned over to federal officials, they said.

Few details about the incident are available, but police said they received information on Saturday about an explosive device at the outpost, located at 633 Howard Street.

The tip was found to be credible, police said, and bomb technicians from the Cook County Sheriff’s Police Department responded to the scene. They located the device in the back of the building.

"This device was made inoperable by bomb squad technicians and the Chicago Fusion Center was notified regarding this incident. Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives responded and assisted in this investigation," said a police statement.

The person of interest was turned over to federal authorities late Sunday afternoon, they said.
