Feb. 18, 2011 Police Blotter: Best Buy Employee Accused of Theft; More Copper Downspouts Swiped

The following items are taken from the Evanston Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.


A Best Buy employee was arrested and accused of siphoning off $384 from product returns dating from Dec. 28 and Jan. 21. Chartyra J. Hill, 23, of Chicago was charged with theft at 11 a.m. on Feb. 17 a the Evanston Police Station. Police accuse her of stealing from customers who returned items at the Evanston store on the 2300 Howard Street and then spending the refunds at another Best Buy store on the South Side of Chicago. Her court date is set for March 24.

Someone stole the copper downspouts off a building on the 300 block of Wesley Avenue between Feb. 11 and Feb. 14.

Four large copper downspouts were stolen from the side of a property by offenders in a dark-colored pickup truck at 5:30 a.m. on Feb. 17 on the 800 block of Ridge Avenue.

Twenty foot of copper downspouts, soffit and a copper box were taken of the side of a building on the 600 block of Ridge Avenue on Feb. 16 or Feb. 17.

A woman set a black Apple iPhone down on a table at 10:30 a.m. on the 600 block of Dempster Street and it was gone when she returned at 12:10 p.m. on Feb. 17.



A burglar entered an unlocked 2010 Chevrolet between 7 p.m. on Feb. 16 and 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 17 on the 600 block of Mulford Street and stole an Apple iPod music player, a Nuvi GPS device, a Canon SureShot camera out of the center console. Some personal papers were also missing from the glovebox. The total value of the stolen items was $500.

A burglar tried to get into a house on the 2100 block of Brummel Street by breaking in through a kitchen window and a door to the basement. The resident noticed the screens to these access points damaged at 6 p.m. on Feb. 17.


Criminal Damage to Property

A rear window was broken out of a 2009 Hyundai between 8:09 p.m. on Feb. 16 and 12:18 a.m. on Feb. 17 at the corner of Church Street and Dodge Avenue.

The mirror of a 2006 Ford was damaged while it was parked on the 1000 block of Lee Street between 1 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. on Feb. 16.

Driving without a License

Arnaldo Hurtado, 19, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 1:16 p.m. on Feb. 17 on the 700 block of Dodge Avenue. His court date is set for March 14. 


Shots Fired 

Shots were fired in the alley of the 2100 block of Emerson Street at 7:34 p.m. on Feb. 17.
