Former Evanston Fire Chief Hired in Winnetka

Alan Berkowsky is the former Evanston fire chief and began his duties Monday.

Alan J. Berkowsky, Evanston's former fire chief, is Winnetka's new fire chief.

Since former Winnetka Fire Chief Scott Smith retired in November, Ralph Ensign of the Glenview Fire Department has been the village's interim fire chief.

Berkowsky worked for the Evanston Fire Department for 28 years and was fire chief from 2004-2010. He holds a bachelor's and master's degree from National-Louis University.

Village trustees will vote to approve Berkowsky's salary and employment agreement Thursday. Berkowsky's annual salary is about $122,500, according to the meeting agenda.

“Chief Berkowsky brings extensive experience and expertise to the Winnetka Fire Department and will lead our already exceptional Department forward to the next level," said Rob Bahan, Winnetka village manager. "We welcome Chief Berkowsky to our Village and wish him continued success.”
