Gas Line Break Shuts Down Sheridan Road

Several buildings were evacuated and Sheridan Road was shut down Monday afternoon while officials investigated a gas line break at Northwestern University.

After a contractor accidentally ruptured a gas line at Northwestern University late Monday afternoon, police and fire temporarily shut down Sheridan Road and evacuated several buildings in the area.

Crews were laying an electrical line in the parking lot south of Patten Gym, at 2407 Sheridan Rd., when they struck a 2" gas line around 1:45 p.m., according to Evanston Fire Department Division Chief Dwight Hohl. Firefighters evacuated 22 buildings in the area and checked them for gas readings, all of which were minimal.

Meanwhile, police and fire closed down Sheridan Road between Colfax and Noyes street. Personnel from Nicor Gas arrived around 3 p.m. to repair the line, according to Hohl. No one was injured, and municipal and residential gas service was unaffected.
