Good Samaritan Tackles Teen Trying to Steal Phone

A man chased a teen on a bike after the teen stole a phone from a woman in front of the south Evanston Jewel-Osco store Friday. He tackled the teen, who kept running, until a Fed Ex delivery driver stopped him and police arrived.

Two Good Samaritans helped chase down a teen after he tried to steal a cell phone outside the Jewel-Osco store in Evanston Friday afternoon, according to police.

A 14-year-old teen riding a bike snatched an iPhone from a 25-year-old woman who was standing in front of the store at 1128 Chicago Ave. around 5:25 p.m., police said. As she started chasing him and yelling, a bystander jumped into action and tackled the teenager. Both he and the teenager fell to the ground in front of Whole Foods, 1111 Chicago Ave., according to police

The teenager kept running south on Chicago Avenue, when a passing Federal Express driver stopped the teen and held him on the ground until police arrived.

The first man who tackled the teenager hurt his hip, and was taken to Evanston Hospital for treatment. The teen also suffered a minor injury to his hand, and is also being treated, according to police. 

Charges are still pending, according to Police Cmdr. Jason Parrott.

“Most likely the offender will be petitioned for theft from person, a felony,” he said in an e-mail. “Robbery charges may be considered if other information is obtained that indicates some force was exerted on the victim or some threat was made, but that is not apparent at this time.”
