Green Bay and Central Has Seen 29 Accidents, 2 With Pedestrians in 2 Years

After a pedestrian was seriously injured last week after getting hit by a car at that intersection, Patch readers said they've long been wary of that corner. In response, Patch got two years worth of accident statistics for that spot.

When Patch ran a story last week about , readers wrote in to say that they've long considered the interesection to be dangerous.

Patch checked with the to see how many accidents there have been at the interstection and learned that while, of course, even a single accident is too many, police do not consider it a problem spot.

According to Cmdr. Jason Parrott, since January 2010, there have been 29 accidents at that corner, two of them involving pedestrians. (The other pedestrian accident did not result in an injury. The man hurt last week remains in critical, but stable condition, Parrott said.)

Those numbers compare to a total of 4,510 traffic accidents in all of Evanston over the same period, 98 of which involved pedestrians and 114 of which involved bicycles.

"That does not show that the intersection is extremely dangerous," Parrott said.

However, many who know the area clearly disagree.

You can hear comments from residents, including Alderman Jane Grover, in the video above.

On Patch, Jim wrote in the original article's comments, "Whenever I approach that intersection either on foot or in a car, my instinct tells me that it is dangerous."

Carol felt similar, writing, "It is an awful intersection."

Part of the issue, Parrott said, is that the intersection sees a lot of foot traffic because of the nearby train station and it also houses the train viaduct, which reduces visibility for drivers.

"It's a very busy intersection," he said. "It handles more pedestrian traffic than other intersections in town."

The driver in last week's accident was cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, he said.
