Lightning Strikes Sheridan Road Apartment Building

It didn't cause a fire, but the residents need to move out while the building's safety is assessed.

A Sheridan Road apartment building was struck by lightning Wednesday shortly before noon, knocking out the power and taking down part of the brick chimney.

The Evanston Fire Department received a call about an explosion in the building’s courtyard and arrived to find the damage to the nine-unit, three-story building at 621-23 Sheridan Road. The chimney had partially collapsed onto two separate porch areas, according to the fire department.

The residents will need to move out while the building’s structural integrity and electrical systems are checked.
