Man Arrested with Loaded Gun, Body Armor in Evanston

The Chicago man had the items in his car Thursday evening, police say.

Evanston police arrested a Chicago man Thursday evening after they said an officer found a loaded handgun, body armor and a facemask in the car he was driving.

An officer pulled over the car in a traffic stop in the 2400 block of Church Street a little before 6:30 p.m. While talking with the driver, 26-year-old Steven L. Hamann of the 1400 block of West Lunt Ave. in Chicago, the officer established probable cause to search the vehicle, police said.

The officer found a loaded .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun along with body armor, a facemask and a small amount of cannabis, police said.

Hamann has been charged with five felony counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, including for unlawful possession of ballistic armor with a firearm; as well as unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a firearm without a valid FOID, possession of firearm ammunition without a valid FOID and unlawful possession of cannabis, all of which are misdemeanors. He was also charged with traffic violations.

He is due in court Aug. 8.

Evanston Police Cmdr. Jason Parrott said the department has no further information on Hamann to release at this time.
