Man Arrested With Shotguns, Marijuana, $900 Cash

Police executed a search warrant at a home on Darrow Avenue near Evanston Township High School, where they believed drugs were being sold. They arrested and charged a 29-year-old Evanston man.

Police arrested a 29-year-old Evanston man this weekend after they discovered several hundred grams of cannabis, nearly a thousand dollars in cash and two shotguns at his home at 1738 Darrow Ave.

The Evanston police department’s special operations group executed a search warrant on the property after they learned that drugs were being sold and that there were weapons present, according to a press release from the police department. When officers arrived at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, they found two loaded 12-guage shotguns, 287 grams of cannabis and $900 in cash, according to the release.

Police subsequently arrested Dennis Kennedy Coleman, 29, at the scene, and charged him with possession of cannabis with intent to deliver, possession of cannabis, possession of a firearm without a valid ID and unlawful use of a weapon. He is set to appear in Cook County Circuit Court in Skokie on Tuesday, Sept. 11, according to police.

Editor's Note: An earlier version of this story contained an incorrect date for the arrest. We sincerely regret the error.

I appreciate your trying to localize this story but by placing the arrest 'near ETHS', you create the sense that the high school was involved. Find another location point to use in this story. We already have too many who believe the high school is suspect in many things.

Marian, thanks for pointing that out. When I pinpointed the house on a map, I noticed that it is one block north and one block east of ETHS. I though it's close proximity to the high school was a relevant detail, particularly for parents, but in no way is that intended to mean ETHS was involved.

The headline has 'Marijuana' spelled incorrectly as 'Marijuna'.

You're right, Heather. That's embarrassing! I've corrected the error; thank you very much for pointing it out.

Is this a new story? I am certain that I saw this story earlier this month. Even the the arrest date is August 2.
Jennifer Fisher (Editor) August 28, 2012 at 04:02 PM
Seymour, it is a new story. That was a typo; the arrest date should read Aug. 25. But you're right, it is similar to something we published earlier in August: http://evanston.patch.com/articles/police-arrest-alleged-drug-dealer-with-4-800-in-cash

Armed Criminal's are being Arrested all over Evanston, yet the idea of not accepting personal Gun Ownership for personal protection is still believed to be plausible. Concealed Carry is coming to Illinois soon and then Illinois will join the other 49 State's that believe in an individuals Right to defend themselves against Armed Criminals. It is time to pull your heads out of the sand and understand that defensive action is not wrong.
