Police: 4 Evanston Businesses Caught Selling Tobacco to Minors

Evanston police issued citations to four local businesses that sold tobacco to underage minors during a sting operation affecting 40 Evanston businesses.

Evanston police issued citations to four Evanston businesses for selling tobacco to an underage minor during a sting operation last week.

Detectives from the police department’s juvenile bureau sent underage minors in to 40 businesses under police surveillance on Thursday, May 23, according to police. The sting was conducted to check whether businesses were following an Evanston ordinance that prohibits the sale of tobacco to anyone under the age of 18

The following businesses were issued citations, according to police: Babylon Foods, 1618 Emerson St.; Silver Pantry, 828 Davis St.; 7-Eleven, 817 Davis St.; Evanston Gas & Food Shell, 101 Ridge Ave.

“Businesses should always be checking for proper identification when selling tobacco to individuals and only accept proper government forms of identification to ensure that the sale is within compliance of local and state laws,” Evanston Police Cmdr. Jason Parrott said in the release.
