Police Blotter April 22: Man Arrested in Food 4 Less Fight; Burglars Take TV, Computer

A recap of crimes committed in Evanston.

The following items are taken from the Evanston Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

 

Battery

A gang-related fight broke out at 3:26 p.m. on April 21 in the parking lot of Food 4 Less on the 2400 block of Main Street. The victim said a man came up to him, hurled gang epithets and punched him before the fight ensued. Miguel Castrejon, 22, of Evanston was arrested and charged with disturbing the peace at 3:26 p.m. on April 21 on the 2400 block of Main Street. Police said Castrejon tried to flee but was arrested in the parking lot. His court date is set for May 12.

Burglary

Burglars stole an iMac white desktop computer and a 26-inch Toshiba television between 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on April 21 on the 2100 block of Madison Place. They entered by breaking down the back door.

 

Theft

A woman walked out of Target with Enfamil baby formula without paying at 10:21 p.m. on April 21 on the 2200 block of Howard Street. The suspect was a black woman about 5-foot-5 and 230 pounds.

A man stole a vodka and chocolate liquor from the Jewel-Osco store on the 1100 block of Chicago Avenue at 8:32 a.m. He reportedly told someone, “Don't say anything or else,” as he was leaving. The suspect was a black man about 6-foot and 230 pounds.

An unattended red Dell laptop computer was stolen at the Evanston Public Library on the 1700 block of Orrington Avenue between 1:35 p.m. and 1:45 p.m.

A black two-strap leather purse was stolen between 9:45 a.m. and 10 a.m. on April 21 on the 2600 block of Ridge Avenue.

 

Vandalism

A driver's window of a 2009 Toyota was broken out between 11:15 p.m. on April 20 and 10:30 a.m. on April 21 on the 100 block of Dewey Avenue.

Someone damaged the slide at Harbert Park at 10 a.m. on April 19 on the 1000 block of McDaniel Avenue.

A planter was broken on a house porch at 12:20 a.m. on April 21 on the 800 block of Hamlin Street.

A 2001 Mercury was keyed between 8:30 p.m. on April 20 and 12:28 p.m. on April 21 on the 1000 block of Dobson Street.

 

Domestic Battery

A 19-year-old Evanston man was arrested and charged with domestic battery at 2:51 a.m. on April 21 on the 1900 block of Hartery Avenue. His court date is set for April 21.

 

Marijuana Possession

Anthony M. Issa, 19, of Chicago was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana at 9:55 p.m. on April 21 on the 200 block of Richmond Avenue. His court date is set for May 26.

Sheldon S. Cannon, 29, of Evanston was arrested and charged with marijuana possession and driving with a suspended license at 6:22 p.m. on March 28 on the 2600 block of Green Bay Road.  Police said they saw him driving and knew that he did not have a license. Once stopped, there was visible marijuana on the floor. Police said he also had a bag of pot on his body. His court date is set for May 11.

 

Driving without a License

Anthony W. Brown, 50, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 8:04 p.m. on April 21 on the 500 block of Chicago Avenue. His court date is set for June 8.

Donald A. Chastang, 55, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 6:03 p.m. on April 21 at the intersection of Simpson Street and Darrow Avenue. His court date is set for June 1.
