Police Blotter April 27: Landlord Allegedly Strikes Tenant; Couple Scheme Cash Away at Food 4 Less

A recap of crimes committed in Evanston.

The following items are taken from the Evanston Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

 

Battery

Police said a landlord grabbed one of his tenants and punched her in the mouth at 3:42 p.m. on April 26 in the common area of an apartment building on the 700 block of Dobson Street. Frank Pittman, 46, of Evanston was arrested and charged with battery at 4 p.m. Police said he came into the mail room to fix a damaged mailbox, and began accusing the woman of breaking it. As she tried to walk out the door, she reported that he grabbed her hair from behind and hit her, busting open her lip. A court date for Pittman is set for June 6.

A mailbox was damaged in the common area of an apartment building between 2:10 p.m. and 3 p.m. on April 26 on the 700 block of Dobson Street.

Burglary

A burglar took a pry tool to the back door of an apartment building on the 500 block of Michigan Avenue between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. on April 25. The burglars stole an Apple MacBook laptop computer; a gray, black and silver Dell laptop computer; a silver Canon ZR-900 mini-DV camera; and a 24-inch Olevia LCD flat screen television.

Cash was stolen out of an unlocked 2007 Saturn parked in an apartment building lot on the 300 block of Sherman Avenue between 6:45 p.m. on April 25 and 1 p.m. on April 26.

A cell phone charger was stolen out of an unlocked 2008 Chevrolet parked on the street between 8 p.m. on April 25 and 8:30 a.m. on April 26 on the 1200 block of Madison Street.

 

Theft

A man and a woman stole cash from Food 4 Less in a con scheme at 1:18 p.m. on April 26 on the 2400 block of Main Street. Police said they fooled a cashier into giving them $428 in a "quick-change" scheme. The suspects are a black man about 5-foot-10 and 190 pounds and a black woman about 5-foot-6 and 250 pounds.

A laptop computer was stolen from the counter at a restaurant on the 1900 block of Green Bay Road at 3:20 p.m. on April 25. The suspect is an Asian male about 5-foot-9 and 150 pounds.

A navy blue North Face jacket was stolen out of an unsecured locker between 5:55 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. on the 1200 block of Church Street.

A black Samsung cell phone was stolen out of an unsecured locker between 5:55 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. on the 1200 block of Church Street.

A second black Samsung cell phone was stolen out of an unsecured locker between 5:55 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. on the 1200 block of Church Street.

An Apple iPod music player was stolen out of an unsecured locker between 5:55 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. on the 1200 block of Church Street.

Domestic Battery

A 45-year-old Evanston woman was arrested and charged with domestic battery at 6:35 p.m. on April 25 on the 2100 block of Darrow Avenue. Her court date is set for May 4.
