Police Blotter April 28: Six Teens Arrested at Dempster and Dodge; Thieves Steal Appliances

A recap of crimes committed in Evanston.

The following items are taken from the Evanston Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Six teenagers were arrested and charged with trespassing, battery, disorderly conduct and felony mob action at the corner of Dempster and Dodge at 7:26 p.m. on April 27. Police said the boys were disturbing customers at Dunkin' Donuts and asked to leave but refused. The boys then threw chairs at the employees, then went outside and threw rocks at the coffee shop while shouting threats. The manager chased them outside, and they ran across the street to Kentucky Fried Chicken and allegedly threw more stones across Dempster Street. One was a 14-year-old Skokie boy and the other five were from Evanston, including two 14-year-olds and three 15-year-olds. A 15-year-old Evanston boy was also charged with aggravated assault.

Theft

Thieves cut a lock off a fence and stole two red snow blowers, a beige gas range appliance, a white gas range appliance, a small white refrigerator, a yellow alternator and a cream-colored trailer from a fenced-in storage lot on the 600 block of Pitner Avenue between 2:30 p.m. on April 26 and 1:15 p.m. on April 27. The appliances were worth about $1,000 total.

A man was spotted stealing Enfamil baby formula from Target on the 2200 block of Howard Street at 11:40 a.m. on April 27. He was described as a black man about 6-foot tall and 185 pounds.

A rust-colored leather wallet and a Glenview State Bank cheque were stolen from the Evanston Hospital between 12:15 p.m. on and 4:30 p.m. on the 2600 block of Ridge Avenue.

A side bag was stolen from an office on the 1300 block of Central Street between 11:30 a.m. and noon on April 20. A suspect was described as a black man about 6-foot-3.

A wallet was stolen at the Dominick's grocery on the 2700 block of Green Bay Road at 4:40 p.m. on April 25.

A purse left in the common area of an apartment building was stolen at 11:03 a.m. on April 27 on the 600 block of Hull Terrace. The purse was black with brown stripes. The suspects are described as two black women, one of them 5-foot tall and 150 pounds, the other 5-foot-5 and 160 pounds.

Baby formula was stolen from the Jewel-Osco on the 1100 block of Chicago Avenue at 5 p.m. on April 27.

A 15-year-old Evanston resident was arrested and charged with retail theft from Babylon Foods at 6:55 p.m. on April 27 on the 1900 block of Dodge Avenue.

 

Battery

Two men assaulted someone on the sidewalk at 3:30 p.m. on April 27 on the 600 block of Hinman Avenue. The suspects were Hispanic men, one of them 5-foot-7 and 180 pounds, the other 5-foot-8 and 170 pounds.

 

Burglary

A purse, cell phone and cash were stolen out of an unlocked car parked on the street at 3 p.m. on April 24 on the 1600 block of Florence Avenue. The burglar apparently opened a rear door.

Thieves broke into a garage through a locked side door and stole a remote control garage door opener from inside a 2011 Honda parked in the garage between 9 p.m. on April 26 and 8 a.m. on April 27 on the 2300 block of Orrington Avenue.

A black iPhone cell phone and some cash were stolen from a secured locker at the YMCA between 6:45 p.m. and 8:20 p.m. on the 1000 block of Grove Street.

 

Vandalism

A garage was found marked up with graffiti at 8:36 a.m. on April 27 on the 1300 block of Church Street.

 

Domestic Battery

A 41-year-old Evanston man was arrested and charged with domestic battery at 9:18 p.m. on April 26 on the 1800 block of Hartrey Avenue. His court date is set for May 4.

 

Driving without a License

Yolanda A. Banks, 39, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 11:35 p.m. on April 26 on the 1700 block of Brown Avenue. Her court date is set for June 6.

Kory K. Booker, 25, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 3:50 p.m. on April 23 on the 800 block of Chicago Avenue. His court date is set for June 1.
