Police Blotter Aug. 11: Boy Robbed of Smart Phone Near Davis El Station

A recap of crimes committed in Evanston.

The following items are taken from the Evanston Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

 

Robbery

A teenage boy pushed another boy against a sign in front of the Davis El station and then stole a gray 2-by-4-inch screen smart phone at 7 p.m. on Aug. 7 on the 1600 block of Benson Avenue. The suspect is a black male about 5-foot-6 and 130 pounds. Police said the victim was walking by the station when he was approached by four boys he knew from Evanston Township High School. The boys chatted him up, and then one asked for money. The victim said he had none, so that same boy asked to use his phone. The victim refused, and then he was attacked. The group of four boys then fled on their bicycles.

Three males allegedly held up a BB gun and demanded money from a pizza delivery man at 12:20 a.m. on Aug. 10 on the 2000 block of Howard Street. Police said they stole cash, cell phone, lottery tickets and food. Police were able to catch the culprits and arrested Robert L. Hammond Jr., 19, of Evanston, Scotty S. Jobe-Scott, 18, of Evanston and a 17-year-old Evanston boy on the 200 block of Richmond Street. All three were charged with aggravated robbery. Their court date is set for Aug. 18.

Burglary

A burglar allegedly broke into an unlocked 2001 Honda at 2:25 a.m. on Aug. 9 on the 1300 block of Ashland Avenue. Police said Dametre J. Irby, 19, of North Chicago then stole a Canon camera and a Tom Tom GPS device. Irby was arrested and charged with burglary from a motor vehicle at 2:33 a.m. His court date is set for Aug. 25.

A burglar broke out a window of a 2003 BMW and stole a turquoise Fossil purse between 10:20 a.m. and 11:05 a.m. on Aug. 10 on the 1000 block of Grove Street.

A burglar broke out a window of a 2008 Toyota and stole a purse between 10:15 a.m. and 11:10 a.m. on Aug. 10 on the 1000 block of Grove Street.

A burglar broke into an unlocked 2007 Kia and stole cash, a pink purse and a Tom Tom GPS device between 7:40 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. on Aug. 9 at the corner of Simpson Street and Darrow Avenue.

 

Theft

Ledwayne White, 43, of Evanston was arrested and charged with theft at 7:54 p.m. on Aug. 9 on the 1500 block of Oak Street. His court date is set for Sept. 15.

A man allegedly stole liquor from the Jewel-Osco on the 1100 block of Chicago Avenue at 7:55 p.m. on Aug. 9. Patrick J. Gordon, 46, of Evanston was arrested and charged with retail theft. His court date is set for Aug. 24.

A man allegedly stole liquor from the Jewel-Osco on the 1100 block of Chicago Avenue at 10 p.m. on Aug. 9. Andrew D. Brown, 21, of Evanston was arrested and charged with retail theft. His court date is set for Sept. 8.

A man allegedly stole liquor from the Jewel-Osco on the 1100 block of Chicago Avenue at 10:41 p.m. on Aug. 9. Otis Graham, 39, of Evanston was arrested and charged with retail theft. His court date is set for Sept. 15.

An unattended Yardmaster lawn mower was stolen from someone's lawn between 10:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. on Aug. 10 on the 1500 block of Dempster Street.

A black leather Von Mauer purse was stolen off a desk at Evanston Hospital between 7:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Aug. 10 on the 2600 block of Ridge Avenue.

A motorcycle cover was stolen off the bike between 7 p.m. on Aug. 9 and 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 10 on the 1900 block of Sherman Avenue.

A man reportedly stole a blue Trek road bicycle between 8 p.m. on Aug. 9 and 8 a.m. on Aug. 10 on the 800 block of Monroe Street. The suspect is a black man about 6-foot and 150 pounds.

A man stole an unlocked Next bicycle from in front of a restaurant on the 1900 block of Dempster Street at 11:19 a.m. on Aug. 10. The suspect is a black man about 5-foot-9.

A locked blue and gray mountain bike was found stolen at 4 p.m. on Aug. 9 on the 700 block of Noyes Street.

A Sprint cell phone was swiped from a purse at a grocery store chain on the 2200 block of Oakton Street.

A garbage can was stolen out of someone's yard at 4 p.m. on Aug. 9 on the 2400 block of Lawndale Avenue.

 

Driving without a License

Travis J. Johnson, 27, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 9 p.m. on Aug. 10 at the corner of Emerson Street and Hovland Court. His court date is set for Sept. 8.

 

Vandalism

Graffiti was found sprayed on an apartment wall at 1:38 p.m. on Aug. 10 on the 500 block of Lee Street.
