Police Blotter: 3 Charged with Battery; Burglar Caught

A recap of crimes committed in Evanston.

Editor’s note: One person’s name was removed from this report because he or she was arrested for marijuana possession, now legal in Illinois.

The following items are taken from the Evanston Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Three men were arrested and charged with battery after an incident that started at The Other Brother coffee shop on the 1500 block of Sherman Avenue at 5:54 p.m. Police said a man reported that Linson M. Evans, 20, of Evanston took his magazine and would not give it back. Evans then allegedly pushed the man before throwing it at him and then leaving the cafe with his two friends, Aubrey Jones, 18, of Evanston and Gracjan Wuszter, 18, of Chicago. The victim told them he'd call police and then chased after them, catching up to them on the 1400 block of Chicago Avenue. Evans pushed the man again when approached, and then the man picked up a backpack belonging to the trio. At that point, Wuszter and Jones allegedly punched the man in the face and he dropped the backpack. Police said Evans, Wuszter and Jones appeared intoxicated and were charged with underage possession of alcohol along with battery. Police allegedly confiscated a bottle of E&J Brandy from the backpack. Their court date is set for Aug. 31.

A male threatened someone with a box cutter on the grounds of the Nichols Middle School at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 18 on the 800 block of Greenleaf Street. The suspect is a black male about 5-foot-5 and 100 pounds.

A woman pushed someone at a nursing home on the 400 block of Davis Street at 3:18 p.m. on Aug. 18. The suspect is a black woman about 5-foot-5 and 112 pounds.

A man punched someone in the face in the street at 1:11 a.m. on Aug. 18 on the 1700 block of Brown Avenue. The suspect is a black man about 6-foot and 180 pounds.

Someone got jumped at 3 a.m. on Aug. 18 on the 2200 block of Oakton Street.

Burglary

An Evanston teenager was charged with burglary after police said they spotted him checking door handles and then enter someone's Subaru station wagon. Hector Gonzalez, 19, was arrested at 3:06 a.m. on Aug. 18 on the 1100 block of Darrow Avenue. Police said when they searched him they found cash, a cell phone, a pair of brass knuckles and someone else's health insurance card. He was also allegedly carrying a fake Illinois identification card. Police charged with Gonzalez with unlawful possession of a weapon and carrying a fake ID on top of the burglary charge. His court date is set for Sept. 9.

Someone broke out the driver's side window of a 2000 Toyota in a burglary attempt between 7:10 a.m. and 8:55 p.m. on Aug. 18 on the 600 block of Main Street.

Theft

A man stole a locked maroon 17-inch Diamondback bicycle between 8 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. on Aug. 17 on the 900 block of Church Street. The bicycle was later recovered.

A specialized gold and black boys' bicycle was stolen off a porch at 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 17 on the 800 block of Sherman Avenue.

Vandalism

A man slashed the driver's side tire of a 2007 GMC truck between 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 17 and 1:58 a.m. on Aug. 18 on the 2000 block of Sherman Avenue. The suspect is a black man about 6-foot-1.

A 16-year-old Evanston resident was arrested and charged with criminal damage to property at 8:15 p.m. on Aug. 18 on the 1800 block of Ashland Avenue.

Man with Gun

A man was seen firing a gun at 9:43 p.m. on Aug. 18 on the corner of Emerson Street an Dodge Avenue.

Public Indecency

Linson M. Clark, 20, of Evanston was arrested and charged with public indecency at 1:17 a.m. on Aug. 18 on the 2200 block of Oakton Street. Clark's companion, Greg Johnson, 20, of Broadview was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana. Their court date is set for Sept. 22.

Obstruction of Justice

Terrance R. Lyons, 26, of Chicago was arrested and charged with obstruction of justice at 12:17 a.m. on Aug. 18 on the 100 block of Ridge Avenue. His court date is set for Sept. 8.

Marijuana Possession

[Name Removed], 25, of Evanston was arrested and charged with possesion of marijuana at 5:35 p.m. on Aub. 17 on the 700 block of Grey Avenue. Dwight C. Wedderburn, 25, of Evanston was also arrested and charged with not having an identification card for firearms and ammunition. The court date for [Name Removed] is Aug. 25. The court date for Dwight Wedderburn is Aug. 31.
