Police Blotter Aug. 24: Boys Robbed on Dewey; Antique Bell Stolen

A recap of crimes committed in Evanston.

The following items are taken from the Evanston Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

 

Robbery

Two boys were robbed at gunpoint at 12:50 p.m. on Aug. 23 on the 1000 block of Dewey Avenue. They told police that they were walking toward the downtown library from the Robert Crowne Center and walked across the field toward Dewey. On the street, they were approached by a black teenager on a BMX bicycle. The cyclist asked if they had cell phones, then flashed a silver pistol. The boys gave up their cell phones, each worth $100, and one of them also gave him $30 cash. He then took off on his bike. The suspect had a dark complexion and a medium build and short hair, about 5-foot-10 inches tall. He wore all black clothing, including a hoodie, a dickey and long pants.

Theft

An antique brass bell was reportedly stolen on April 5 from a shed behind a house on the 2400 block of Ridge Avenue. The bell had been mounted on the wall and was last seen on March 25. The incident was not reported until Aug. 23 at 10:57 a.m. The owner of the bell believed he knew two suspects, a white man about 6-foot and 185 pounds and a white woman about 5-foot-7 and 120 pounds.

A man allegedly stole a bottle of Smirnoff green apple vodka at 6:06 p.m. on Aug. 23 from the Jewel grocery store on the 2400 block of Howard Street. David D. Morgan, 20, of Chicago was arrested and charged with shoplifting. His court date is set for Sept. 13.

A bicycle and an air compressor were stolen from someone's lawn between 12:01 a.m. on Aug. 20 and 2 p.m. on Aug. 23 on the 2000 block of Main Street.

A purse was stolen through an unlocked door at the Evanston Hospital between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Aug. 22 on the 2600 block of Ridge Avenue.

A rear bicycle tire was stolen at 11 a.m. on Aug. 21 on the 1400 block of Chicago Avenue. The suspect is a black man about 5-foot9 and 170 pounds. The bike had been locked to a rack.

A blue multi-speed Raleigh boys' bicycle was stolen from someone's lawn at 9 a.m. on Aug. 23 on the 2500 block of Park Place.

A black Motorola cell phone was stolen between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Aug. 18 from a store on the 1600 block of Chicago Avenue.

 

Burglary

Burglars broke into a house through an unlocked bedroom window and stole a platinum ring with three diamonds, a gold ring with one diamond, a men's wedding ring with three diamonds, a black onyx band, gold necklaces and cash between 9:30 a.m. and 2:10 p.m. on Aug. 23 on the 2400 block of Greenleaf Street.

Jewelry was reported stolen from an apartment at 10 a.m. on Aug. 22 on the 1600 block of Chicago Avenue.

A 13-year-old Evanston resident was arrested and charged with burglary at 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 24 on the 1700 block of Ashland Avenue.

A 13-year-old Evanston resident was arrested and charged with burglary at 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 22.

 

Vandalism

The front quarter panel of the rear passenger side of a 2002 Honda was reported keyed at 1:15 p.m. on Aug. 23 on the 2400 block of Hartzell Street.

The rear glass door of a building at Northwestern University was reported broken at 1:59 a.m. on Aug. 18 on the 1800 block of Sheridan Road.

Graffiti was discovered at Butler Park along the North Shore Channel at 9:24 a.m. on Aug. 23 on the 2200 block of Foster Street.

 

Marijuana Possession

Samuel B. Gordon, 23, of Chicago was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana at 7:40 p.m. on Aug. 22 on the 700 block of Custer Avenue. His court date is set for Sept. 1.

 

Driving without a License

Victor M. Hernandez, 40, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 12:15 a.m. on Aug. 24 on the 500 block of South Boulevard. His court date is set for Sept. 15.

Lisa A. Masopust, 40, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 8:52 a.m. on Aug. 22 on the 800 block of Howard Street. Her court date is set for Sept. 27.

Terrence M. O'Donnell, 48, of Lake Bluff was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 9:15 p.m. on Aug. 20 on the corner of Lincoln Street and Green Bay Road. His court date is set for Sept. 15.

Victor E. Ortiz, 21, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 5:40 p.m. on Aug. 23 on the corner of Dempster Street and Dodge Avenue. His court date is set for Sept. 27.

 

Man with Gun

A man was seen with a gun at 8:25 p.m. on Aug. 23 on the 1500 block of Central Street.
