Police Blotter Aug. 26: Homeless Man Bites Cop; Burglar Busts Car Window to Get Stereo

A recap of crimes committed in Evanston.

The following items are taken from the Evanston Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

 

Battery

A homeless man allegedly bit a police officer at 3:15 a.m. on Aug. 25 at the Evanston Police Station. Jerome Smith, 57, of Evanston was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, battery and disorderly conduct. Police were called to an apartment building on the 100 block of Clyde Avenue at 2:26 a.m., on the report of a man kicking in the back door of the building and making a racket. On arrival, police found Smith hiding behind the car. Police said he was heavily intoxicated and refused to cooperate, so they arrested him on the disorderly charge. Once at the police station, police said Smith threatened to bite an officer, and then bit one on the leg. His court date is set for Oct. 18.

Burglary

A man broke out the front passenger window of a 1993 Plymouth and stole a Power Acoustic car stereo between 2:40 p.m. on Aug. 24 and 5:43 a.m. on Aug. 25 on the 900 block of Elmwood Avenue. A neighbor told police he saw a man near the car in early-morning hours as the car alarm was going off. The suspect is a thin black man about 6-foot tall. He was wearing a white tank top and blue jeans and had his hair pulled into a bun.

 

Medical Fraud

Julie B. Burkett, 40, of Evanston was arrested and charged with unauthorized possession of a prescription pad at 7:15 a.m. on Aug. 25 at Evanston Police Station. Police said Burkett had worked for a physician from November 2010 to June 2011, and at some point stole the pad. The doctor reported it missing on July 22. Her court date is set for Sept. 5.

 

Theft

A router and cable box were stolen from an apartment on the 1600 block of Chicago Avenue on July 27. It is believed someone got in the building when someone signed for a package.

 

Arrest Warrant

Alfonso Gill, 45, of Evanston was arrested on a warrant at 9:12 p.m. on Aug. 22 on the 800 block of Davis Street.

Steven R. Lewis, 55, of Dallas, Texas, was arrested on a warrant at 9:50 p.m. on Aug. 19 on the 1200 block of Emerson Street.

Joseph R. Quarles, 24, of Evanston was arrested on a warrant at 12:25 p.m. on Aug. 24 at the Evanston Police Station.
