Police Blotter Aug. 30: Police Chase Vandal Down CTA Tracks; Woman Thrown Down Stairs

A recap of crimes committed in Evanston.

The following items are taken from the Evanston Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Assault & Battery

A man allegedly grabbed a woman's arm in a dispute and pushed her down a flight of stairs at his apartment building at 7:22 p.m. on Aug. 29 on the 1000 block of Dewey Avenue. Police said Jose de los Santos Cabrera, 38, of Evanston had accused the victim of stealing a bicycle when she was at the building last week. The argument escalated until Cabrera allegedly tossed her down the stairs. He was arrested and charged with battery. His court date is set for Oct. 13.

Someone was battered in Harbert Park on the 1300 block of McDaniel Avenue at 4:38 p.m. on Aug. 28.

A man pointed a knife at someone in an alley of the 1900 block of Howard Street at 6:25 p.m. on Aug. 27. The suspect is a black man about 5-foot-10 and 160 pounds.

 

Vandalism

Police said an officer saw a man punched the window of a 2010 Buick Enclave, cracking the glass at 11:15 a.m. on Monday. The car was parked between the CTA and the Metra tracks on the 900 block of Chicago. Police pursued the alleged vandal, Vashawn R. Jackson, 22, of Evanston and he allegedly jumped the fence and ran down the El tracks for several blocks between the Main and Dempster stations before Jackson was stopped. Police arrested him at 11:36 a.m. on Aug. 29 on the 1300 block of Sherman Avenue and charged him with criminal damage to property and trespassing on CTA property. His court date is set for Sept. 15.

 

Burglary

A burglar broke into a 2005 Mercedes-Benz and stole cash, a Samsung camcorder and a black and gray camera between 6 p.m. on Aug. 25 and 1 p.m. on Aug. 26 on the corner of Grove Street and Florence Avenue.

Someone broke into an unlocked 2006 Ford between 10:15 a.m. on Aug. 24 and 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 28 on the 700 block of Asbury Avenue. Nothing was taken.

 

Theft

A man allegedly stole Enfamil baby formula and some food from the Jewel-Osco grocery store on the 1100 block of Chicago Avenue at 7:36 p.m. on Aug. 29. Timothy J. Brown, 43, of Des Plaines was arrested and charged with retail theft. His court date is set for Oct. 13.

A wallet and a Sprint HTC Evo phone were swiped at a chain restaurant on the 1400 block of Sherman Avenue at 3:54 p.m. on Aug. 27.

A locked Schwinn bicycle was stolen off a bike rack on the 1000 block of Grove Street at 6:20 p.m. on Aug. 29.

A woman allegedly removed an HTC Evo phone from a signed Fed-Ex package at 8:30 p.m. on Aug 28 on the 2000 block of Lake Street. The suspect is a black woman about 5-foot-6 and 250 pounds.

 

Marijuana Possession

Michael T. O'Malley, 20, of Evanston was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana at 10:59 p.m. on Aug. 29 on the corner of Crawford Avenue and Gross Point Road. His court date is set for Sept. 22.

 

Driving without a License

Betzalel M. Bassman, 26, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 8:04 p.m. on Aug. 28 on the corner of McCormick Boulevard and Golf Road. A court date is set for Sept. 13.

Asha L. Williams, 23, of Skokie was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 11:10 a.m. on Aug. 26 on the 400 block of Dodge Avenue. Her court date is set for Sept. 15.
