Police Blotter Dec. 2: Craig's List Seller Tricks Man into Buying iPad Box; Burglars Use Power Outage to Aid in Theft

The following items are taken from the Evanston Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Burglary
A burglar broke into a garage during a power outage on Nov. 7 and stole three Schwinn bicycles, a lawn mower, an electric leaf blower and an electric hedge trimmer on the 2400 block of Nathaniel Place between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. The total value of the items was $1150.

A burglar broke into the T&L Auto Collision & Rebuilders garage on the 2300 block of Main Street and stole a desktop computer, a Kodak camera and photo equipment, tools and equipment and a snow blower between Nov. 16 and Thursday.

Theft
A Chicago man met a Craig's List seller in a parking garage on the 900 block of Church Street to purchase an iPad. Without opening up the box, the Chicago man handed over $150 to the seller, who then ran away, in between the Metra and CTA-Davis stations. The box did not contain an iPad, but only a heavy I-Pass Tollway transponder. The suspect is a white man about 5-foot-6, thin and weighing about 140 pounds. He was wearing a gray wool coat, a burgundy winter cap and blue jeans. He was carrying a bag.
Three black males about 5-foot-6 in height ran from the North Face store on the 900 block of Church Street, carrying three black and pink North Face fleeces and other clothing at 4:34 p.m. on Wednesday.
A man allegedly stole a black and white 15-inch laptop computer between 2:45 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. from an unlocked classrom in a church on Thursday on the 900 block of Chicago Avenue. The suspect is a black man about 6-foot and 200 pounds.
Someone broke off a lock on a locker at the YMCA on the 1000 block of Grove Street and stole a black wallet, a black cell phone, blue jeans and a set of keys between 7 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. on Thursday.
Someone stole mail from a mailbox at 7 p.m. on Thursday on the 1400 block of Main Street.
A man was seen trying to take a package from a house porch at 3:12 p.m. on Thursday on the 1500 block of Cleveland Street.
A man stole a black Samsung cell phone from the 7-Eleven store counter at 8:14 p.m. on Thursday on the 800 block of Dodge Avenue.
Reckless Conduct
A 17-year-old Skokie boy was arrested and charged with reckless conduct at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the Evanston Police Station. His court date is set for Dec. 22.
Vandalism
The front window of an apartment was broken out at 10:15 p.m. on Wednesday on the 1900 block of Howard Street.
The driver's side of a 2007 Lexus was keyed between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Nov. 17 on the 2200 block of Howard Street in the parking lot of Target.
A garage was tagged with graffiti at 7:57 p.m. on Wednesday on the 1300 block of Darrow Avenue.
Drug Possession
Kenneth P. Ross, 48, of Evanston was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance at 12:13 a.m. on Thursday on the 2300 block of Greenwood Street. His court date is set for Dec. 22.
Arrest Warrant
Carl A. Clifton, 34, of Evanston was arrested on a warrant at 5:46 p.m. on Tuesday on the 700 block of Howard Street.
