Police Blotter Feb. 14: Apartment Looted on Hinman; Thief Arrested at Whole Foods

A recap of crimes committed in Evanston.

The following items are taken from the Evanston Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Theft

A Wilmette man was arrested after police said he tried to steal a bundle of groceries from the downtown Whole Foods on Friday afternoon. Roger S. Weller, 52, was charged with retail theft at 1:10 p.m., on Feb. 11 in the 1600 block of Chicago Avenue. Police said he was caught leaving the store with $32 worth of groceries he hadn't paid for, including lemons, oranges, three cans of diced tomatoes, a gallon of milk, a loaf of bread, a carton of orange juice and a can of shaving cream. His court date is set for March 24.

A United Parcel Service package containing a tan and brown dress was stolen from the lobby of a condo building on the 800 block of Church Street between 1:08 p.m. on Feb. 11 and 11:46 a.m. on Feb. 12.

An Apple iPhone that was left unattended in a bag was reported stolen at 4 p.m. on Feb. 12 on the 2600 block of Ridge Avenue.

 

Burglary

A number of items were found stolen from an apartment on Friday on the 800 block of Hinman Avenue. Two cameras, one a Canon, one a Sony, a Compaq laptop, a gold ring, gold locket and gold earrings all were stolen. The theft occurred some time between Jan. 31 and Feb. 11. The items were valued at $1,600.

A victim let a woman into a home on the 3200 block of Grant Street between 2:30 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. on Feb. 13. While the woman distracted the victim, a juvenile entered a bedroom and stole two pearl earrings and two gold necklaces.

A burglary victim came home to find a rear patio door open and a Bosch drill and screwdriver missing from the house. The theft occurred between noon on Feb. 12 and 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 13 on the 1400 block of Ashland Avenue.

A burglar came into an unlocked garage on the 2500 block of Hartzell Street between 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 12 and noon on Feb. 13 and stole cash from a 2010 Toyota.

A passenger window of a 2002 Chevrolet was broken out and a blue Toshiba laptop computer was stolen from the car between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Feb. 12 on the 900 block of Grey Avenue.

The front driver's side window of a 2000 Honda was broken and an Aiwa car stereo was stolen between 8 p.m. on Feb. 12 and 4:50 p.m. on Feb. 13 on the 1000 block of Florence Street.

The passenger window of a 2000 Nissan was broken out and a Sony car stereo was stolen on Feb. 12 or Feb. 13 on the 1100 block of Dewey Avenue.

A burglar entered an unlocked 1996 Honda between 9:30 p.m. on Feb. 12 and 3:15 p.m. on Feb. 13 on the 1000 block of Wesley Avenue and stole a Sony car stereo, cash and 10 compact discs.

The front passenger window of a 1989 Toyota was broken out and a Sony car stereo was stolen on Feb. 12 or Feb. 13 on the 1100 block of Dewey Avenue.

A burglar tried to get into a building by breaking a back door window between 10 p.m. on Feb. 12 and 6:30 a.m. on Feb. 13 on the 2500 block of Park Place.

The front passenger window of a 1999 Nissan was broken out and the car was ransacked on Feb. 12 or Feb. 13 on the 1100 block of Dewey Avenue.

Cash was stolen from an unlocked 2001 Toyota between 10 p.m. on Feb. 10 and 6:45 a.m. on Feb. 11 on the 200 block of Callan Avenue.

Someone entered a 2006 Chevrolet between 6 p.m. on Feb. 10 and 8 a.m. on Feb. 11 and ransacked the vehicle on the 300 block of Custer Avenue.

 

Criminal Damage to Property

A side-view mirror of a 2010 Honda was damaged as it was parked on the 400 block of Hamilton Street between 10:30 p.m. on Feb. 12 and 1:29 a.m. on Feb. 13.

A side-view mirror of a 2000 Honda was knocked off as it was parked on the 400 block of Hamilton Street between midnight and 10:30 a.m. on Feb. 13.

Wires were removed from a 2001 Chevrolet between 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 13 on the 1900 block of Sherman Avenue.

 

Domestic Battery

A 44-year-old Evanston woman was arrested and charged with domestic battery at 6 p.m. on Feb. 11 at her home on the 800 block of Crain Street. Her court date is set for Feb. 16.

 

Driving under the Influence

Craig R. Culbertson, 55, of Hinsdale was arrested and charged with driving under the influence at 7:22 p.m. on Feb. 11 at the intersection of Chicago Avenue and Sheridan Road at 7:22 p.m. His court date is set for March 28.

 

Drug Paraphernalia

Liberia G. Flowers, 36, of Chicago was arrested and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia at 12:24 a.m. on Feb. 11 on the 2100 block of Howard Street. Her court date is set for March 28.

 

Driving without a License

Ike Colvin, 22, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 12:24 a.m. on Feb. 14 on the 1700 block of Benson Avenue. His court date is set for March 31.

Lucila Hernandez-Sanchez, 43, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 10:50 p.m. on Feb. 13 at the intersection of Davis Street and Maple Avenue. Her court date is set for March 21.

Jhiron D. King, 26, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 1:15 a.m. on Feb. 14 on the 7500 block of North Western Avenue in Chicago. His court date is set for March 31.

Cesar R. Vinanzaca, 58, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 6:20 a.m. on Feb. 12 on the 700 block of Asbury Avenue. His court date is set for March 21.

 

Marijuana Possession

Jeffrey A. Craig. 19, of Evanston was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana along with a 17-year-old Evanston resident at 10:38 a.m. on Feb. 12 at Evanston Township High School on the 1600 block of Dodge Avenue. The court date for Craig has been set for Feb. 22.

Damien V. Myles, 29, of Evanston was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana at 1:40 p.m. on Feb. 11 on the 100 block of Chicago Avenue. His court date is set for Feb. 25.

 

Evanston Ordinance Violation

Sean A. Costello, 18, of Chicago was arrested and charged with violating a city of Evanston ordinance at 1:39 a.m. on Feb. 13 on the 300 block of Dodge Avenue. His court date is set for March 23.

Anthony D. Iglesias, 19, of Evanston was arrested and charged with violating a city of Evanston ordinance at 1:28 a.m. on Feb. 12 at Century Theaters on the 1700 block of Maple Avenue. His court date is set for March 9.
