Police Blotter Feb. 15: Chicago Man Arrested on Robbery Charges; Woman Arrested after Altercation at Jewel

A recap of crimes committed in Evanston.

The following items are taken from the Evanston Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

 

Robbery

Police arrested a Chicago man Saturday afternoon on assault and robbery charges stemming from an incident on the corner of Howard Street and Elmwood Avenue on Feb. 5. Police said Abashe A. Mathis, 18, approached a man with two accomplices between 5 and 6 p.m. on Feb. 5, and offered to sell the man some marijuana. When the man said he wasn't interested, Mathis and his companions roughed the man up and stole $6 from his pocket. They started to leave, but police said Mathis came back and punched the man in the face, causing injury. Police arrested Mathis at 3:10 p.m. on Feb. 12 at the Evanston Police Station. His court date is set for Feb. 23.

Battery

A Chicago woman was arrested after an altercation at the Jewel-Osco on Howard Street on Sunday evening. Police said Pamela L. Henry, 43, took four packages of Enfamil baby formula from the store without paying at 6:05 p.m. on Feb. 13 on the 2400 block of Howard. When she was confronted by security, police said she fought with them, and as she was led back in the store, she kicked the guard in the shin. She was charged with one count of theft and one count of battery. Since she has been convicted of shoplifting before, Henry was charged with a felony. The baby formula had a retail price of $108. Her court date is set for Feb. 23.

 

Burglary

Someone reported that they left their apartment on the 1600 block of Chicago Avenue locked up at 4 p.m. on Feb. 12, but when the resident returned at 6:10 p.m. on Feb. 13, a silver bracelet, a black watch and a moonstone necklace had been stolen. There was no apparent sign of forced entry. 

A 6-foot black man was spotted breaking into an unlocked 2001 Kia at 4:05 a.m. on Feb. 14 on the 100 block of Callan Avenue. The car was parked in an alley and the suspect ransacked the interior. He was described as a black man about 150 pounds, wearing a black coat and a black hat.

 

Theft

A woman left a red leather purse rest at an establishment on the 1700 block of Maple Avenue on Feb. 14. When she returned to get it, the purse was gone.

 

Domestic Battery

A 31-year-old Evanston man was arrested and charged with domestic battery at 3 p.m. on Feb. 11 at his home on the 2100 block of Howard Street. His court date is set for Feb. 16.

 

Driving under the Influence

Shami O. Cox, 21, of Skokie was arrested and charged with driving under the influence at 3:40 a.m. on Feb. 12 on the 1700 block of Simpson Street. Her court date is set for March 22.

Humberto R. Munoz, 48, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving under the influence at 4:35 p.m. on Feb. 14 on the 600 block of Custer Avenue. His court date is set for March 1.

 

Driving without a License

Helday Brito-Cervantes, 26, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 9:42 a.m. on Feb. 14 on the 1700 block of Dodge Avenue. Her court date is set for March 31.

Maria E. Dieppa, 54, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 8:15 p.m. on Feb. 14 on the 2000 block of Howard Street. Her court date is set for March 14.

Toni L. Fisher-Vann, 46, of Gurnee was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 6:45 p.m. on Feb. 13 on the 1400 block of Main Street. Her court date is set for March 1.

Michael J. Jefferson, 32, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 3:35 p.m. on Feb. 14 on the 1600 block of Foster Street. His court date is set for March 24.

Eduardo Lopez, 41, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 12:35 p.m. on Feb. 14 on the 500 block of Chicago Avenue. His court date is set for March 21.

Christopher P. McNeil, 23, of Arlington Heights was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 9:40 a.m. on Feb. 14 on the 1300 block of Dodge Avenue. His court date is set for March 24.

Israel Sotelo, 40, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 8:25 p.m. on Feb. 12 on the 1300 block of Dodge Avenue. His court date is set for March 1.
