Police Blotter Feb. 21: Woman Arrested on Battery Charges; Backpack Stolen as Man Slept

A recap of crimes committed in Evanston.

The following items are taken from the Evanston Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Battery

Rosalind M. Chaney, 21, of Evanston was arrested and charged with battery at 11:45 p.m. on Feb. 19 on the 1400 block of Darrow Avenue. Her court date is set for March 14.

Burglary

A burglar came into a house through an unlocked front door and stole a purse between 11 p.m. on Feb. 9 and 7:30 a.m. on Feb. 10 on the 1500 block of Greenwood Avenue.

A burglar broke into a 2007 Toyota with a pry bar and stole a spare tire, the jack,a set of jumper cables and three compact discs between 8:30 p.m. on Feb. 17 and 8 a.m. on Feb. 18 on the 1300 block of Sherman Avenue.

The driver's side window of a 1997 Ford was broken out and the stereo stolen between 2 a.m. and 3:20 a.m. on Feb. 20 on the 1000 block of Dewey Avenue.

A burglar entered a garage on the 600 block of Dodge Avenue between 8 p.m. on Feb. 18 and 1:30 a.m. on Feb. 19 and stole a city of Evanston sticker and miscellaneous papers.

A man told police he saw a burglar enter the unlocked trunk of his 2008 Scion at 12:25 a.m. on Feb. 19 on the 2700 block of Marcy Avenue, but nothing was stolen. The suspect was described as a 5-foot-10 black man who weighed 200 pounds and wore a brown Carhart jacket and a brown knit cap.

 

Theft

Oscar A. Montoya, 31, of Evanston was arrested and charged with theft at 10:50 p.m. on Feb. 19 on the 1100 block of Florence Avenue. His court date is set for Feb. 19.

A man took a nap at 9:15 p.m. as he was waiting for the train on Feb. 16 on the 900 block of Davis Street. When he woke up at 9:58 p.m., his backpack was gone. The backpack contained an Asus laptop computer and a text book.

Two rims and tires were taken off a 2007 Honda while it was parked in the garage on the 600 block of Linden Place between 5 p.m. on Feb. 18 and 7:35 a.m. on Feb. 19.

A hood off a 2000 Honda was removed while it was parked in the garage between 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 18 and 7:35 a.m. on Feb. 19 on the 600 block of Linden Place.

An Apple iPod Touch music player in a black case was stolen from a car after its driver left the car wash on the 1200 block of Dodge Avenue at 12:15 p.m. on Feb. 18.

A man left his jacket on the back of a chair at 10 p.m. on the Feb. 18 on the 2400 block of Main Street, and his black Apple iPhone was stolen.

A front license plate was stolen off a 1997 Ford while it was parked on the street on the 1900 block of Dempster Street on Feb. 17 or Feb. 18.

 

Criminal Damage to Property

Kristen H. Ausmer 22, of Evanston was arrested and charged with criminal damage to property at 8:45 a.m. on Feb. 19 on the 400 block of Callan Avenue. Her court date is set for March 1.

Michael T. Zito, 42, of Evanston was arrested at his home on the 800 block of Dempster Street and charged with criminal damage to property at 2:45 p.m. on Feb. 18. His court date is set for Feb. 23.

Four juveniles threw beer bottles at a house on the 900 block of Elmwood Avenue, causing two windows to break at 11:15 p.m. on Feb. 19. The juveniles were known to the victim.

Three individuals in a four-door vehicle threw a brick from out of their car at a 2010 Jeep, shattering the window at 3:40 p.m. on Feb. 20 on the 1600 block of Ridge Avenue.

The driver's side window of a 2003 Toyota was broken out while it was parked on the street on the 1500 block of Greenleaf Street between 10 p.m. on Feb. 19 and 2:36 a.m. on Feb. 20.

The rear passenger window of a 2002 Ford was broken out between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Feb. 20 on the 600 block of Linden Place.

 

Driving Under the Influence

Chuka O. Nchekwube, 20, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving under the influence at 9 a.m. on Feb. 18 on the 600 block of Dartmouth Place. A court date is set for March 28.

 

Domestic Battery

A 47-year-old Evanston resident was arrested and charged with domestic battery at home on the 600 block of Oakton Avenue at 10 p.m. on Feb. 17. A court date is set for Feb. 23.

A 22-year-old Evanston man was arrested and charged with domestic battery at home on the 1800 block of Lyons Street at 12:32 a.m. on Feb. 19. His court date is set for Feb. 23.

 

Driving without a License

James A. Gaines, 46, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 12:10 a.m. on Feb. 19 on the 1600 block of Dodge Avenue. His court date is set for March 28.

Juan Garcia-Romero, 52, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 8:05 a.m. on Feb. 20 on the 2000 block of Dewey Avenue. His court date is set for March 31.

Juan M. Salazar, 35, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 5 a.m. on Feb. 19 on the 1700 block of Dempster Street. His court date is set for March 1.

 

Shots Fired

Two gun shots were heard at 12:24 a.m. on Feb. 19 on the 1200 block of Noyes Street.
