Police Blotter Feb. 22: Woman Knocked Down and Robbed; Sisters Charged with Stealing Food at Jewel

A recap of crimes committed in Evanston.

The following items are taken from the Evanston Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

 

Robbery

A woman was robbed on Monday afternoon while walking on Simpson Street near Darrow Avenue. Police said she was approached from behind by two black men about 20 years old. One of them pushed her to the ground and held her down while the other rifled through her pockets and stole her red Samsung cell phone and her Apple iPod Touch music player. They then fled west down an alley. The woman flagged down a car at 4:24 p.m. on Feb. 21 on the 2000 block of Darrow Avenue and the driver helped her call police. The phone was worth $100 and the music player was valued at $250.

Theft

A pair of sisters were arrested on Monday afternoon after police said they stole food from the Jewel-Osco on the 2400 block of Howard Street. Police said Alexis W. Clanton, 23, of Evanston and Samantha N. Tripp, 30, of Chicago loaded up a red garbage bag with pop, Wing Zings and Tater Babies and then pushed a Jewel cart out of the store without paying. Security at Jewel chased after them and detained Clanton, but Tripp fled on foot before smacking the security guard in the head and then taking off in her car, according to police. Clanton was arrested at 3:25 p.m. on Feb. 21 and charged with retail theft at the Evanston Police Station. Tripp pulled up to the police station in her car at 4:40 p.m. to pick up her sister, and police then arrested her at the station and charged her with retail theft and battery. Their court date is set for March 14.

Andrei Maior, 29, of Melrose Park was arrested and charged with retail theft at 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 20 at the Jewel-Osco on the 1100 block of Chicago Avenue. His court date is set for March 31.

A wallet was stolen from a woman's purse at 2 p.m. on Feb. 20 on the 900 block of Church Street. The thief later used the woman's credit cards.

 

Burglary

A set of orange dollies was taken from the back of an unlocked truck between 5 p.m. on Feb. 20 and 9 a.m. on Feb. 21 on the 100 block of Chicago Avenue. Two large dollies were stolen along with one small dolly.

Someone pried open a mailbox and stole mail between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Feb. 19 on the 1000 block of Noyes Street.

Three men in their 20s tried to break into a house from the porch on the 1600 block of Ashland Avenue at 1:55 p.m. on Feb. 21.

 

Criminal Damage to Property

The glass was broken to the front doors of a building lobby between 4 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. on Feb. 19 on the 1400 block of Chicago Avenue.

A window on the south side of a building was broken out on Feb. 21 on the 2100 block of Dewey Avenue.

 

Domestic Battery

A 45-year-old Evanston man was arrested and charged with domestic battery at 6 p.m. on Feb. 18 on the 2300 block of Noyes Court. His court date is set for Feb. 24.

 

Driving under the Influence

Becky L. Crump, 52, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving under the influence at midnight on Feb. 21 on the 2000 block of Grant Street. Her court date is set for March 14.

 

Possession of Marijuana

David A. Carmichael, 18, of Evanston was arrested and charged with marijuana possession at 1:10 a.m. on Feb. 21 on the 1700 block of Crain Street. His court date is set for March 23.

 

Driving without a License

Shalisha L. Brown, 29, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 11:30 a.m. on Feb. 20 on the 600 block of Davis Street. Her court date is set for April 4.

Serafin Gutierrez, 30, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 12:04 p.m. on Feb. 21 on the 1700 block of Orrington Avenue. His court date is set for March 31.

Rigoberto Romero-Morales, 32, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 9 a.m. on Feb. 21 at the intersection of Asbury Avenue and Dobson Street. His court date is set for March 21.

Debra M. Wasserman, 27, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 4:15 p.m. on Feb. 21 on the 1300 block of Asbury Avenue. Her court date is set for March 28.
