Police Blotter Jan. 20: Idling Car Stolen Outside CVS; Man Caught Stealing Booze at Dominick's
A recap of crimes committed in Evanston.
The following items are taken from the Evanston Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Theft

A woman went into the CVS/pharmacy on the 100 block of Asbury Avenue at 9:25 p.m. on Jan. 19, and left her car running outside. When she returned to her car 20 minutes later, a man drove off with the blue, four-door 2000 Ford Focus. She described the car thief as a black man in a black jacket with white stripes on the sleeves. He was also wearing a ballcap.
An Evanston man was detained by security at Dominick's after police said he took a bottle of alcohol from the grocery on the 1900 block of Dempster Street at 9:20 p.m. on Jan. 19. Whitney A. Williams, 39, was arrested and charged with shoplifting. Police said he was trying to steal a fifth of E&J Brandy from Dominick's by hiding the bottle in his coat.

An Apple iPad tablet computer was reported stolen on the Purple Line at the Dempster station at 10:30 p.m. on Jan. 18 on the 1300 block of Sherman Avenue.
A 16-year-old Evanston resident was arrested and charged with shoplifting at Target on the 2200 block of Howard Street at 6 p.m. on Jan. 19.
Burglary
A burglary forced open a garage service door and stole a Toro snowblower between 6 p.m. on Jan. 18 and 8 a.m. on Jan. 19 on the 1100 block of Fowler Avenue.
A 2006 Cadillac and a 2008 Toyota were broken into on Jan. 17 on the 2100 block of Central Park Avenue. A cup of candy and some loose change was stolen from the cars.
Someone broke into a garage through the service door with a pry tool between 8:30 p.m. on Jan. 18 and 9:57 a.m. on Jan. 19 on the 1200 block of Fowler Avenue.
Battery
A 15-year-old resident was arrested and charged with battery at home at 6:02 p.m. on Jan. 19.
Disobedience to Police
Joseph T. Sobecki, 21, was arrested and charged with disobeying a police officer at 3 a.m. on Jan. 19 on the 1400 block of Oak Avenue. His court date is set for March 9.
Driving without a Valid License
Enrique Matias-Tellez, 41, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 9:25 a.m. on Jan. 18 at the intersection of Greenwood Street and Ridge Avenue. His court date is set for March 14.
