Police Blotter July 12: Women Attacked at Shell Station; Two Men Arrested on Burglary Charges

A recap of crimes committed in Evanston.

The following items are taken from the Evanston Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Two women were attacked at the at the Evanston Gas & Food Shell station on the 100 block of Ridge Avenue at 5:12 p.m. on July 8. Police said one of the women was standing outside her car, pumping gas and taking a photo with her cell phone when a blue Volkswagen hatchback drove up and its occupants yelled for her to get out of the way. She told them they could go around her, so two women jumped out of the Volkswagen and began hitting her. Her friend then got out of her car to defend her, when a man came out of the VW and began punching the second woman in the face. The man then stole the first woman's cell phone off the ground before the three assailants fled in the VW. The attackers were described as black women and a black man in their late 30s to early 40s. They had a medium complexion. The man was bald; one woman had short hair and the other had longer hair.

Burglary

A man allegedly stole an Apple iPod music player from an unlocked 2011 Toyota between 6:15 a.m. and 6:21 a.m. on July 10 on the 900 block of Ridge Court. Michael Allen, 18, of Chicago was arrested and charged with burglary from a motor vehicle at 6:21 a.m. His court date is set for Aug. 25.

An Evanston man was arrested in connection to a May 9 burglary of a gas can on the 1300 block of Hinman Avenue. Prentice F. Phillips, 46, of Evanston was picked up at 6:20 a.m. on July 10 on the 1800 block of Lyons Street. He was charged with burglary from a motor vehicle after police said he was positively identified in a lineup. Police said he stole the gas can out of the back of a 1965 VW Microbus before fleeing on May 9. His court date is set for July 18.

A burglar entered an unlocked garage on the 2300 block of Cowper Avenue and stole Rayban and Ralph Lauren sunglasses along with a Garmin GPS device from a 2008 Hyundai parked in the garage between 9 p.m. on July 8 and 7 a.m. on July 11.

A burglar slashed a screen and broke out the window of a business on the 900 block of Grove Street between 5:40 p.m. on July 8 and 9:45 a.m. on July 11, but failed to get inside.

A burglar tried to open the window of a 2011 Honda when the alarm sounded at 11:47 p.m. on July 10 on the 1400 block of Seward Street.


Theft

A blue 2005 Chrysler sedan was stolen off the lot at Hugo's Auto on the 600 block of Pitner Avenue between 5 p.m. on July 10 and 10:50 a.m. on July 11.

Charles D. Gordon, 19, of Chicago was arrested and charged with theft at 10 a.m. on July 9 on the 8900 block of South Ridgeland Avenue in Chicago. His court date is set for July 18.

A weed whacker, a lawn mower and other garden equipment were left unattended in an alley of the 1900 block of Foster Street when they were stolen between 4 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on July 11.

A Navy blue and black motorcycle cover was stolen off a 2007 Yamaha between 7 p.m. on July 10 and 9 a.m. on July 11 on the 1900 block of Sherman Avenue.

A man stole a black Giant Escape 2 off the sidewalk at 7:18 p.m. on July 1 on the 800 block of Davis Street.

An unlocked light blue Schwinn bicycle was stolen from an apartment common area at 3:09 p.m. on July 11 on the 1200 block of Elmwood Avenue.

A set of keys was left in the door of a house when they were reportedly stolen between 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on July 11 on the 2400 block of Wade Street.

A 14-year-old Evanston resident was arrested and charged with shoplifting at 3:15 p.m. on July 11 on the 2500 block of Ewing Avenue.

 

Domestic Battery

A 28-year-old Chicago man was arrested and charged with domestic battery at 3:31 a.m. on July 10 at the CVS/pharmacy on the 100 block of Asbury Avenue. His court date is set for July 20.

A male was allegedly involved in a domestic assault at 4:01 p.m. on July 9 on the 2400 block of Nathaniel Place. A 50-year-old Evanston man was arrested and charged with assault. His court date is set for July 13.

A man was involved in an domestic assault at 8:50 p.m. on July 7 at an apartment on the 2000 block of Grey Avenue. A 38-year-old Evanston man was arrested and charged with aggravated assault at 2:45 a.m. on July 8 on the 5400 block of North Lincoln Avenue in Chicago. His court date is set for July 20.

 

Arrest Warrant

Dametre G. Irby, 19, of Evanston was arrested on a warrant at 10:11 p.m. on July 8 on the 2100 block of Dewey Avenue. His court date is set for Aug. 5.

Wendell H. Thoma, 46, of Evanston was arrested on a warrant at 12:30 a.m. on July 10 on the 1500 block of Fowler Avenue.

 

Driving without a License

Lonnie M. Preister, 47, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 4:48 p.m. on July 11 on the 1700 block of Dodge Avenue. His court date is set for July 29.

Andre T. Watson, 30, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 7:30 a.m. on July 11 on the 100 block of Ridge Avenue. His court date is set for Aug. 24.

 

Underage Possession

Erick D. Cattouse, 18, of Evanston and Robert L. Hall III, 20, of Evanston were arrested and charged with underage possession of alcohol at 9:19 p.m. on July 11 on the 700 block of Custer Avenue. Their court dates are set for July 29.

 

Other Offenses

Deshawn J. Thomas, 19, of Evanston was arrested and charged with some other criminal offense at 11:20 p.m. on July 11 on the 1700 block of Lyons Street. His court date is set for July 19.
