Police Blotter July 18: Bike Thieves Arrested After Police Scuffle; Women Charged with Attacking Pregnant Woman

A recap of crimes committed in Evanston.

The following items are taken from the Evanston Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

 

Battery

A woman allegedly pushed a pregnant woman to the ground and then her daughter reportedly bit her ear at 2:59 a.m. on July 16 at the Nail Design shop on the 1900 block of Howard Street. Sandra F. Coleman, 50, of Waukegan and Annika Coleman, 33, of Wheeling were arrested and charged with battery at 3 a.m. on July 16 on the 1900 block of Howard Street. Annika Coleman also had a warrant out for her arrest in Kane County. Their court dates are set for Aug. 5. The pregnant woman was taken to St. Francis Hospital for minor injuries and observation, but was released.

A woman allegedly interfered with the arrest of the Colemans and hit a police officer at the same location, Nail Design, on the 1900 block of Howard Street at 3:18 a.m. on July 16. Arnesha L. Hobson, 35, of Palatine was arrested and charged with battery. Her court date is set for Aug. 31.

A woman allegedly hit someone while waiting in line at Target on the 2200 block of Howard Street at 4:25 p.m. on July 16. Laura A. Freed, 46, of Evanston was arrested and charged with battery. Her court date is set for Aug. 5.

A man allegedly cut someone with a knife and smashed out all the windows of a 1996 Saturn at 6:10 p.m. on July 15 on the 2000 block of Dodge Avenue. The suspect is a black man about 5-foot-8 and 145 pounds.

 

Theft

Just after midnight on July 15, a report went out to Evanston police about two Trek bicycles stolen from a rack on the 800 block of Colfax Street. Police searched the area and saw two men with the bikes at Penny Park on the 1500 block of Lake Street. Police said they stopped the men and one assaulted an officer while the other fled on foot before being arrested. Police said the one who fled also had a pair of bolt cutters on him. Jonathan H. Staffney, 18, of Evanston was arrested and charged with theft, two counts of felony resisting arrest and trespassing at a park after hours at 12:35 a.m. on July 15 on the 1500 block of Ashland Avenue. Najee S. Muhammed-Bey, 18, of Evanston was arrested for theft, felony possession of burglar tools, resisting arrest and trespassing at a park after hours. Two police officers were treated for minor cuts and scrapes at Evanston Hospital. The court dates for Staffney and Muhammed-Bey are set for July 25.

A woman allegedly distracted a clerk while a man and woman stole her wallet from behind at 12:40 p.m. on July 15 on the 500 block of Main Street. The suspects are a black woman about 5-foot-10, a black man about 6-foot-1 and 180 pounds and a Hispanic woman about 5-foot-2.

A black leather Guess wallet was removed from a gym bag in a public building on the 1700 block of Main Street between 8:20 p.m. and 10 p.m. on July 11.

Flood light bulbs were stolen off a garage at 4:06 p.m. on July 16 on the 900 block of Ridge Avenue.

Cash and a pink Motorola Razr phone were stolen from a booth at the art festival on the 1400 block of Sheridan Road between 5:10 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. on July 16.

Two juveniles were caught in a lawn trying to steal a bicycle at 2:38 p.m. on July 16 on the 1200 block of Hartrey Avenue.

A silver Razor scooter and a black bicycle were unlocked when stolen from a lawn on the 2400 block of Lake Street between 11:45 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. on July 16.

Two Trek bicycles were stolen from a lawn on the 1400 block of Lake Street at 12:35 a.m. on July 15. The suspects are two black men about 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds.

A charcoal hybrid 26-inch bicycle was stolen off a bike rack between 7:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. on July 14 on the 800 block of Chicago Avenue.

An olive green Bianchi bicycle was reported stolen off a bike rack at 5:45 p.m. on July 15 on the 800 block of Chicago Avenue.

A locked Bianchi bicycle was stolen from the sidewalk on the 600 block of Lake Street at 7:30 p.m. on July 14.

A red, silver and black 28-inch Schwinn bicycle was locked to a tree at Washington Elementary School at 3:23 p.m. on July 16.

A yellow boys' Trek bicycle was stolen off a sidewalk between 11 a.m. on July 16 and 12:55 p.m. on July 17 on the 2200 block of Sherman Avenue.

A green, 20-inch Next bicycle was left unlocked at a public building on the 1600 block of Foster Street when it was stolen at 10 p.m. on July 16.

A black Apple iPhone 3 was stolen off a park bench at Centennial Park on Lake Michigan at 8 p.m. on July 17 on the 1800 block of Sheridan Road. The suspect is a black man about 5-foot-9 and 150 pounds.

A license plate was found stolen off a 1999 Isuzu at 4:44 p.m. on July 17 at the corner of Howard Street and Custer Avenue.

 

Burglary

A burglar entered a house through the kitchen window and stole cash between 6:45 p.m. and 11 p.m. on July 15 on the 1600 block of Oakton Street.

A burglar went into a house through an unlocked door between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. on July 15 on the 2000 block of McDaniel Avenue and stole a silver Apple MacBook laptop computer.

A burglar entered an apartment through an unlocked door and stole a white wallet between 8 p.m. on July 14 and 8:30 a.m. on July 15 on the 900 block of Hamlin Street.

A burglar entered a garage on the 1000 block of Darrow Avenue and stole food and a compact disc player between 6 p.m. on July 14 and 7 a.m. on July 15.

The window of a 2003 Toyota was left partially wound down and a burglar was able to steal luggage with personal items, a canvas bag with shoes and a duffle bag between 2 a.m. and 2:15 a.m. on July 16 on the 500 block of Sherman Avenue.

A burglar smashed out the passenger window of a 2009 Toyota parked in the municipal lot on the 300 block of Dodge Avenue between 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on July 17. A purse was stolen.

A burglar smashed out the passenger window of a second car parked in the municipal lot on the 300 block of Dodge Avenue between 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on July 17. A Coach purse was stolen.

A 1993 Jeep was burglarized while it was left unlocked at a gas station on the 1900 block of Green Bay Road at 11:45 a.m. on July 14. A wallet was stolen.

 

Vandalism

Kenya E. Roach, 38, of Skokie was arrested at the Skokie Court House and charged with criminal damage to property at 9 a.m. on July 13. Her court date is set for Aug. 12.

A woman reportedly slashed the tires of a 1999 Mercury during a domestic dispute at 8:52 p.m. on July 14 on the 2000 block of Warren Street. The suspect is a black woman about 5-foot-5 and 135 pounds.

Someone broke off the light fixtures near the front porch of a house on the 200 block of Asbury Avenue between 10:30 p.m. on July 16 and 11 a.m. on July 17.

Someone dented a 2001 Toyota in several places, including the front passenger door, the rerar left side, and the right back passenger door between 8:30 p.m. on July 16 and 6 a.m. on July 17 on the 700 block of Reba Place.

Someone smashed the windshield of a 2003 Subaru between 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on July 15 on the 1700 block of Livingston Street.

A bicycle frame was reportedly scratched while it was stored in a locker between 6 p.m. on July 13 and 3 p.m. on July 17 on the 700 block of Mulford Street.

 

Disturbing the Peace

Mayra Y. Gomes, 25, of Evanston was arrested and charged with disturbing the peace at 4:30 a.m. on July 17 on the 1100 block of Hartrey Avenue. Her court date is set for Aug. 19.

Gabriel E. Tyler, 24, of Evanston was arrested and charged with disturbing the peace at 1:57 a.m. on July 16 on the 2500 block of West Birchwood Avenue in Chicago. His court date is set for Aug. 2.

 

Driving under the Influence

Jennifer L. McDermott, 37, of Morton Grove was arrested and charged with driving under the influence at 3:30 a.m. on July 17 on the 2300 block of Foster Street. Her court date is set for Aug. 12.

 

Arrest Warrant

Vance Brooks, 43, of Skokie was arrested on a warrant at 1:39 a.m. on July 14 on the 100 block of Barton Avenue.

Lee D. Foster, 27, of Des Plaines was arrested on a warrant at 9:47 p.m. on July 14 on the 1300 block of Foster Avenue.

Antiwan Green, 35, of Evanston was arrested on a warrant at 10:10 a.m. on July 12 on the 200 block of Callan Avenue.

Charles Thomas, 48, of Evanston was arrested on a warrant at 1:42 p.m. on July 13 on the 1400 block of Chicago Avenue.

 

Trespassing

Patrick J. Gordon Jr., 46, of Evanston was arrested and charged with trespassing at 8 a.m. on July 16 on the 1700 block of Judson Avenue. His court date is set for Aug. 2.

Lewis A. Belcher-Rector, 24, of Evanston was arrested and charged with being in Burnham Shores Park after hours at 2:57 a.m. on July 17 on the 1200 block of Lake Shore Boulevard. His court date is set for Aug. 19.

 

Driving without a License

Guadalupe Cejeda, 38, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 8:40 a.m. on July 16 on the 700 block of Sheridan Road. Her court date is set for Aug. 5.

Kianna R. Dean-Jackson, 18, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 5:48 p.m. on July 17 on the 1900 block of Grey Avenue. Her court date is set for Aug. 24.

Judy F. Ferrera, 29, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 2:15 a.m. on July 17 on the 700 block of Howard Street. Her court date is set for Aug. 5.

Guadalupe Gonzalez, 24, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 3:30 p.m. on July 14 on the 1000 block of Ridge Avenue. Her court date is set for 3:30 p.m.

Gregory T. Jackson, 24, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 5:48 p.m. on July 17 on the 1900 block of Grey Avenue. His court date is set for Aug. 24.

Badar Jamal, 42, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 3:40 a.m. on July 17 on the 1200 block of Howard Street. His court date is set for Aug. 5.

Jose L. Martinez, 21, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 1:08 p.m. on July 16 on the 1800 block of Lake Street. His court date is set for Aug. 5.

Lashawn M. Milam, 25, of Deerfield Beach, Fla., was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 3:45 p.m. on July 17 on the 1200 block of Main Street. Her court date is set for Aug. 10.

Octavio Vargas-Suarez, 42, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 9:38 a.m. on July 17 on the 800 block of Oakton Street. His court date is set for Aug. 10.

Shane L. Wideman, 41, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 10:01 p.m. on July 17 on the 2300 block of Emerson Street. His court date is set for Aug. 10.

 

Public Urination

Marc A. Norris, 23, of Chicago was arrested and charged with public urination at 4:14 p.m. on July 15 on the 200 block of Custer Avenue. His court date is set for Aug. 19.

 

Shots Fired

Gun shots were reported at 9:16 p.m. on July 14 at the corner of Ridge Avenue and Davis Street.

Gun shots were reported at 3:09 a.m. on July 15 on the 1000 block of Darrow Avenue, but police said the sound may have been from fireworks.
