Police Blotter July 8: Teens Try to Steal Honda; Computer Stolen from Arts Center

A recap of crimes committed in Evanston.

The following items are taken from the Evanston Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. 

 

Theft

A man saw three teenage males messing around with his neighbor's red 1993 Honda Civic at 4:17 a.m. One male was at the trunk, one at the hood and one sitting in the car. A few minutes later, they took off in a gray SUV. The suspects, identified as Hispanic males in white shirts and dark shorts, apparently broke out the front driver's side window and tampered with the steering column in an attempt to steal the car on the 1300 block of Brummel Street. When police arrived, the hood and trunk were both open and the window was shattered.

A gray Toshiba laptop computer was stolen from an instructor at the Noyes Cultural Arts Center on the 900 block of Noyes street between 5 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. on July 7. He was hanging things up in the hallway with his laptop computer on the floor, when he glanced someone walking by. He later noticed his computer was gone. He called police at 6:45 p.m. and then shortly thereafter, he received a call from a woman in Chicago who said she had his laptop computer and that her daughter had bought it off the street for $80. When she tried to pawn the laptop, the pawn broker told her it was stolen. She offered to sell it to the victim for $80, but he insisted that she come to Evanston as he also lost his car keys, which were in the laptop case. She declined and said she would call back but did not. Police continue to investigate.

A Wilmette teenager was arrested after police said she stole clothing from Urban Outfitters on the 900 block of Church Street at 6:46 p.m. on July 7. Johanna M. W. Rosenberg, 19, of Wilmette, was charged with retail theft. Her court date is set for Aug. 5.

Someone tampered with the gasoline pumps at the A&O BP station between 9:30 p.m. and 10:05 p.m. on July 6 on the 400 block of Asbury Avenue.

A Coach purse was stolen from the back of a chair at a restaurant on the 500 block of Dempster Street between 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on July 6.

A dark green girls' Giant bicycle was found stolen off a porch at 3:30 p.m. on July 7 on the 2000 block of Maple Avenue.

A white and blue bicycle was stolen from an alley of the 1300 block of Oak Avenue at 3:45 p.m. on July 7.

 

Burglary

Burglars slashed a screen to break into a house on the 1700 block of Dempster Street and steal a glossy black Hewlet-Packard laptop computer, cash and credit and debit cards between 2:50 a.m. and 3:10 a.m. on July 7.

A burglar stole a Magellan GPS device from an unlocked 2009 Pontiac between 8:30 p.m. on July 6 and 8:15 a.m. on July 7 on the 2300 block of Foster Street.

A burglar stole a Garmin GPS device from an unlocked 2003 Mercedes-Benz between 12:01 a.m. on July 6 and 10:47 p.m. on July 7 on the 2200 block of Foster Street.

A burglar stole a Garmin GPS device from an unlocked 2010 Honda parked on the street between 5 p.m. on July 2 and 9:30 p.m. on July 5 on the 500 block of Sheridan Square.

Someone broke into an apartment storage locker between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. on July 7 on the 700 block of Hinman Avenue. Nothing was taken.

 

Battery

A man allegedly pushed someone at 11:42 a.m. on July 6 out in the street on the 900 block of Sherman Avenue. John M. Toledo, 25, of Skokie was arrested and charged with aggravated battery. His court date is set for Aug. 3.

Edward P. Clark, 87, of Chicago was arrested and charged with battery at 3:30 p.m. on July 7 on the 1600 block of Chicago Avenue. His court date is set for Aug. 10.

A teenage boy allegedly spit on someone at a medical center on the 1500 block of Emerson Street at 7:36 p.m. on July 5. A 17-year-old Chicago boy was arrested and charged with aggravated battery. His court date is set for Aug. 1.

 

Vandalism

Someone spray-painted a silver stripe on a 2002 Toyota between 11 p.m. on July 6 and 9 a.m. on July 7 on the 1700 block of South Boulevard.

A garage door was scratched between 6 p.m. on July 6 and 3:08 p.m. on July 7 on the 1300 block of Church Street.

 

Domestic Battery

A 23-year-old Evanston man was arrested and charged with domestic battery at 3 p.m. on July 6 at the Evanston Police Station. His court date is set for July 20.

 

Disorderly Conduct

A 17-year-old Evanston resident was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct at 11:10 a.m. on July 9 on the corner of Church Street and Dodge Avenue.

 

Trespassing

Michael T. Belski, 20, of Evanston; Nicholas A. Middleton, 20, of Chicago; and Johnnie L. Richardson, 23, of Evanston were arrested and charged with trespassing at 4:06 a.m. on July 6 on the 1800 block of Brown Avenue. Their court dates are set for Aug. 10.

 

Driving without a License

Nancy C. Chevez, 20, of Glenview was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 9:30 a.m. on July 6 at the Evanston Police Station. Her court date is set for Aug. 12.

Cairo G. Douglas, 22, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 6:37 p.m. on July 7 on the 100 block of Ridge Avenue. A court date is set for July 29.
