Police Blotter June 1: Robbery Arrest Made on Howard; Second Man Robbed Leaving 7-Eleven

A recap of crimes committed in Evanston.

The following items are taken from the Evanston Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

 

Robbery

A man was robbed as he walked home at 11 p.m. in a parking lot on the 900 block of Foster Street. He told police that he had bought some food at the 7-Eleven on the 800 block of Emerson Street before short-cutting through the parking lot when he saw two shadows creep up from behind him. Suddenly, one man grabbed him around the neck and threw him to the ground. The other took out a wooden stake, while the first man asked, “What do you have on you?” The man surrendered $10 and his Apple iPhone, worth $300. The robbers then fled north. The suspects are black males in their late teens or early 20s, wearing black clothing. One was about 5-foot-8 and the other 5-foot-7.

A 15-year-old Chicago boy was arrested and charged with robbery at 3:13 p.m. on May 27 at the corner of West Howard Street and North Marshfield Avenue in Chicago. Police were called to the Subway restaurant on the 300 block of Howard Street in Evanston on the report of a robbery. Upon arrival, they spoke with the victim and reviewed the security tapes at Subway. Police said three young males intimidated the victim into giving up his cash, $8. Police said they identified the arrested boy down the street after reviewing the tapes. The other two suspects remain at large. Both are black men in their early 20s wearing black hoodies. They are tall and thin.

Battery

A man threw alcohol on a woman and punched her at 12:20 a.m. on May 31 on the corner of Foster Street and Jackson Avenue. The suspect is a black man about 6-foot tall and 250 pounds.

Two women hit someone outside the CVS/pharmacy on the 100 block of Asbury Avenue at 11:20 p.m. on May 26.

A woman threatened someone at 10:20 p.m. on May 30 on the 700 block of Dobson Street.

 

Burglary

A woman went into an unlocked apartment and stole a money order at 10:30 p.m. on May 30 on the 800 block of Dodge Avenue. The suspect is a white woman about 5-foot-5 and 170 pounds.

 

Theft

A dark blue, four-door 2006 Nissan Altima was stolen from an apartment complex parking lot between 10 p.m. on May 30 and 7 a.m. on May 31 on the 1900 block of Howard Street.

A blue Bianchi road bicycle was stolen from a rack between 10:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. on May 31 in front of the Evanston Public Library on the 1700 block of Orrington Avenue.

A 21-inch black Craftsman lawn mower and garden equipment were stolen from a lawn on the 2100 block of Emerson Street between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. on May 31.

A green leather Gucci wallet with cash was stolen from a purse hanging on a coat rack at a restaurant on the 800 block of Clark Street between 5:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.

An unattended black Samsung cell phone was stolen from a chain restaurant on the 700 block of Church Street at 7 p.m. on May 30.

A 12-year-old Evanston resident was arrested and charged with theft at 9:48 a.m. on May 26 at Chute Middle School on the 1400 block of Oakton Avenue.

A 15-year-old Evanston resident was arrested and charged with retail theft at 5:19 p.m. on May 28 at Dominick's on the 1900 block of Dempster Street.

A second 15-year-old Evanston resident was arrested and charged with retail theft at 6:05 p.m. on May 28 at Dominick's on the 1900 block of Dempster Street.

 

Vandalism

A man allegedly broke out the glass on the front door of a chain restaurant on the 1700 block of Sherman Avenue at 12:40 p.m. on May 31. Michael G. Harriss, 49, of Evanston was arrested and charged with criminal damage to property at 12:49 p.m. His court date is set for June 8.

 

Driving under the Influence

Daniel Flores, 36, of Midlothian, Va., was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol at 2:52 a.m. on May 31 at the intersection of Greenwood Street and Chicago Avenue. His court date is set for July 12.

 

Arrest Warrant

Van J. Thomas, 30, of Chicago was arrested on a warrant at 6:30 p.m. on May 27 on the 600 block of Howard Street.

 

Marijuana Possession

Robyn D. Randolph, 27, of Evanston was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana at 7:20 p.m. on May 31 on the 2000 block of Dodge Avenue.

 

Driving without a License

Rafael Aritzmendi, 24, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 11:40 p.m. on May 27 on the 2000 block of Sheridan Road. His court date is set for July 5.

Louis M. Avalos, 60, of Skokie was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 5:43 p.m. on May 29 on the 500 block of Dodge Avenue. His court date is set for July 12.

Antonio E. Avila-Olvera, 19, of Cicero was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 11:53 p.m. on May 27 on the 2000 block of Sheridan Road. His court date is set for July 5.

Curtis L. Crawford, 43, of Cicero was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 3:39 p.m. on May 31 on the 100 block of Custer Avenue. His court date is set for July 8.

Torin J. Dupper, 19, of Decatur, Ala., was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 12:25 a.m. on May 28 on the 2000 block of Sheridan Road. His court date is set for June 29.

Johnnie J. Jackson, 31, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 7:20 p.m. on May 31 on the 2000 block of Dodge Avenue. His court date is set for June 27.

A 15-year-old Winthrop Harbor resident was arrested and charged with driving without a license at 7:15 p.m. on May 29 at the intersection of Fowler Avenue and Greenwood Street.

A 16-year-old Chicago resident was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 9:55 p.m. on May 30 on the 1800 block of Dodge Avenue.
