Police Blotter June 7: Two Alleged Thieves Arrested in Two Hours at Jewel

A recap of crimes committed in Evanston.

The following items are taken from the Evanston Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

 

Theft

A Chicago man allegedly stole Tropicana juice, 7-Up, catfish nuggets, tequila, Icehouse beer and Smirnoff vodka from the Jewel-Osco store on the 1100 block of Chicago Avenue at 9 a.m. on June 5. Nathaniel Miller, 40, was arrested and charged with retail theft. Police said he had stuffed his groceries in plastic Jewel bags he brought with them and walked, pretending he had paid. The items totaled $74 with tax. His court date is set for June 28.

An Evanston man allegedly stole 17 sticks of Old Spice deodorant from Jewel on the 1100 block of Chicago Avenue at 7:28 a.m. on June 5. William Burton, 58, was arrested and charged with felony retail theft at 7:29 a.m. at the corner of Greenleaf Street and Custer Avenue, where he was stopped after a brief chase under the El tracks. After he was searched, police said they found a copper pipe for smoking drugs. The deodorant was worth $62. He was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. His court date is set for June 21.

Silver colored hubcaps were stolen off a 2007 Chevrolet between 3:30 p.m. on June 5 and 9:30 a.m. on June 6 in an alley on the 2500 block of Crawford Avenue.

A purple-and-white Bianci bicycle was stolen at 6 p.m. on June 6. The bike had been locked to a parking meter on the 1700 block of Chicago Avenue.

A black Apple iPhone was stolen from an apartment between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. on June 5 on the 500 block of Sheridan Road. The phone was last seen plugged into a wall charger. The suspect is a 5-foot black male who weighed about 120 pounds who had been in the home.

The rear license plate and sticker was ripped off a motorcycle at 9:11 p.m. on June 6 on the 1500 block of Sherman Avenue. The owner noticed it missing after returning to the motorbike in the parking lot.

 

Burglary

A Dell laptop computer was stolen out of a 2004 Lincoln Continental between 3 p.m. on June 4 and 11 a.m. on June 5 on the 1600 block of Lake Street. There was no forced entry to the car.

 

Vandalism

A tenant reportedly kicked in an apartment door at 3 p.m. on June 5 on the 1100 block of Dewey Avenue. 

A fence was tagged with black spray paint outside a house on the 1500 block of McDaniel Avenue at 7:30 a.m. on June 5.

Someone drew purple ink on a 2009 Honda between 7 p.m. on June 5 and 9:30 a.m. on June 6 on the 600 block of Hull Terrace.

 

Driving without a License

Juana Boyzo, 23, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 10:50 a.m. on June 4 on the 2100 block of Howard Street. Her court date is set for June 20.

Joseph E. Ryan, 39, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 9:13 a.m. on June 4 on the 7700 block of North Sheridan Road in Chicago. His court date is set for June 20.

Lashaun S. Walker, 30, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 10:22 p.m. on June 6 on the 700 block of Howard Street. His court date is set for July 5.
