Police Blotter June 8: Woman Arrested on Pay Check Forgery Charge; $1,900 of Jewelry Missing from Craft Fair

A recap of crimes committed in Evanston.

The following items are taken from the Evanston Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

 

Theft

A Chicago woman was accused of creating a phony paycheck and cashing it at the Green Bay Currency Exchange last November. Shantelle M. M. Berry, 20, was arrested and charged with forgery and theft by deception at 10:20 a.m. on June 6 at the Cook County Jail in Chicago. Evanston Police said Berry cashed a counterfeit paycheck from the United Parcel Service on Nov. 29, 2010, and it was only later discovered to be a fraud. Her court date on the two felony charges is set for June 21.

A woman reported that a number of her items went missing after an art fair at 5 p.m. on May 7 on the 1800 block of Church Street. She had asked a friend to deliver the items from her stand at the fair to her car, but only a month later did she notice them missing. The items, which included bracelets, earrings and other jewelry, totaled about $1900 of value.

A pickpocket stole a black Verizon Plam Pixie cell phone at 4:30 p.m. on June 3 on the 1700 block of Dodge Avenue as the victim was walking down the sidewalk. The suspect is a black man about 5-foot-9 and 160 pounds.

A garbage can was stolen out of someone's lawn at 2 a.m. on June 7 on the 2100 block of Emerson Street.

A debit card and a U-card were stolen after they were left unattended at the St. Francis Hospital on the 300 block of Ridge Avenue between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. on June 4.

 

Sexual Abuse

Rafael A. Villanueva, 25, of Evanston was arrested and charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse at 2:05 a.m. on June 6 on the 1800 block of Laurel Avenue. His court date is set for June 28.

 

Battery

A pair of coworkers got into a fight at the South Boulevard El station at 8:45 p.m. on June 6. The fight was allegedly started by a black man about 5-foot-7 and 140 pounds.

A man allegedly hit his neighbor at 11:05 p.m. on June 6 on the 600 block of Brummel Street. The suspect is a white man about 5-foot-9 and 180 pounds.

 

Burglary

A burglar took cash, a Nikon camera, a white Apple iPod music player and silver aviator sunglasses out of an unlocked car at 6 p.m. on June 7 on the 3300 block of Central Street.

A pair of known suspects allegedly tried to kick the door in to an apartment on the 1500 block of Dobson Street at 10:47 p.m. on June 7. The suspects are two black men, one 6-foot-4 and 313 pounds; the other, 6-foot tall and 230 pounds.

 

Vandalism

Someone threw a brick through the windshield of a 1994 Dodge at 11:35 p.m. on June 6 in an alley off the 1900 block of Oakton Street.

A garage was tagged with graffiti at 6:39 p.m. on June 6 on the 500 block of Sheridan Road.

 

Domestic Battery

A 28-year-old Evanston woman was arrested and charged with domestic battery at noon on June 6 on the 1900 block of Foster Street. Her court date is set for June 15.

 

Driving under the Influence

Wali S. Shakir, 42, of Des Plaines was arrested and charged with driving under the influence at 7:19 p.m. on June 7 on the 1300 block of Dodge Avenue. His court date is set for July 5.

 

Marijuana Possession

Joshua C. Dabney, 18, of Evanston was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana at 11:59 p.m. on June 7 on the 1500 block of Lake Street. His court date is set for June 27.

 

Driving without a License

Kimberly D. Davis, 44, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 8:34 p.m. on June 7 at the intersection of Emerson Street and Hovland Court. Her court date is set for June 30.

Rita S. Demoz, 25, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 8:57 a.m. on June 3 at the intersection of Ridge Avenue and Hull Terrace. Her court date is set for July 12.

Nura C. Mowzoon, 33, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 11:07 p.m. on June 7 on the 300 block of South Boulevard. Her court date is set for Aug. 5.

Owen J. Rothe, 28, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 5:30 a.m. on June 3 on the 1400 block of Elmwood Avenue. His court date is set for July 12.
