Police Blotter March 1: Burglar Takes Electronics From Sleeping Victim; Man Steals Items While Waiting for Sandwich

A recap of crimes committed in Evanston.

The following items are taken from the Evanston Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Burglary

A burglar got into a house on the 300 block of Custer Avenue while the residents were sleeping between 1 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Monday. When the victim awoke, he noticed the living room window was open and his PlayStation 3, black Hewlett-Packar laptop computer, silver Apple iPod Nano music player and wallet were all stolen.

A burglar knocked out a passenger window on a 2006 Volvo between 1:50 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. on Feb. 28 on the 1100 block of Chicago Avenue. He or she then took a white Apple MacBook laptop computer and a Trashy Diva tote bag from the car.

Someone broke the passenger window out on a 2005 Toyota and stole a GPS device from inside the car on Feb. 27 or Feb. 28 on the 1200 block of Sherman Avenue.

Theft

Daniel B. Perez, 18, of Chicago was arrested and charged with theft at 11:45 a.m. on Feb. 28 on the 800 block of Church Street. His court date is set for March 31.

A man said he let a man from the street in his house so that he could make him a sandwich. While the resident was in the kitchen preparing the food, the man from the street moved around the house and stole a wallet at 4 p.m. on Feb. 27 on the 2100 block of Asbury Avenue. The thief was described as a 5-foot-8 white man about 55 years old and 160 pounds.

Someone stole a 25-foot section of copper downspout from a garage on the 1100 block of Hinman Avenue between 11 p.m. on Feb. 27 and 8:15 a.m. on Feb. 28.

Someone stole mail from a mailbox that was meant to be mailed out between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Feb. 27 on the 2500 block of Ridgeway Avenue.

A pair of juveniles tried to steal items from a store on the 1900 block of Dempster Street at 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 28, but security was able to grab the items from the boys before they fled the store.

 

Domestic Battery

A 75-year-old Evanston man was arrested and charged with domestic batery at 1:47 a.m. on Feb. 26 on the 1900 block of Jackson Avenue. His court date is set for March 8.

 

Driving under the Influence

Jose E. Reyes-Calesco, 40, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving under the influence at 2:15 a.m. on Feb. 28 on the 800 block of Sherman Avenue. His court date is set for March 15.

 

Driving without a License

Rodney K. Allen, 34, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 10:30 a.m. on Feb. 28 on the 700 block of Custer Avenue. His court date is set for March 28.

Jonas Cercas, 38, of Palatine was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 6:14 p.m. on Feb. 25 on the 2600 block of Green Bay Road. His court date is set for April 14.

Cheryl D. Graham, 39, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 5:45 a.m. on Feb. 25 on the 1800 block of Church Street. Her court date is set for March 14.

 

Graffiti

Someone sprayed black paint on a building on the 1600 block of Hinman Avenue between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Feb. 27.
