Police Blotter March 21: Two Men Robbed at Gunpoint on Saturday

A recap of crimes committed in Evanston.

The following items are taken from the Evanston Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Robbery

A man was walking home at 4 a.m. on Saturday on the 500 block of Dempster Street when he was robbed by a man with a gun. The robber stopped him and said, “Give me your f------ money!” and the man handed him $190 cash. The robber was described as a 6-foot black man about 40 years old who weighed about 180 pounds. He wore sunglasses, a brown leather jacket, black pants and black shoes. He had a circular scar on his forearm.

A man was walking along the 2100 block of Grant Street at 10:47 p.m. on Saturday when three men approached him on the sidewalk and began punching him in the face. One then said, “Give me your s---! What about your pockets?” The robbers rifled through the man's pockets, but found nothing. As they did so, one said, “Don't touch me or I'll shoot you!” They then grabbed the man's black American Eagle backpack and fled. The backpack contained the man's wallet, with ID and credit cards. He also lost his Android cell phone, a sketchbook, a set of keys, and a pair of headphones. The three attackers wore dark clothing, but no further description was given.

Burglary

Someone entered an apartment on the 900 block of Dobson Avenue and stole a burgundy Hewlett-Packard laptop computer between 6:30 a.m. and 11:29 p.m. on March 19.

Burglars broke out the window to a common basement area of a building between 3 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. on March 19 on the 1300 block of Seward Avenue. Once inside, they stole a black Trek Navigator bicycle and a metallic gray Trek bicycle.

A burglar entered a 1996 Honda parked on the street on the 1100 block of Darrow Avenue between 8 p.m. on March 17 and 8 a.m. on March 18. The burglar took the vehicle registration, insurance paperwork and a child booster seat.

Someone entered an unlocked 1993 Volvo and stole a Garmin GPS device from inside the car between 5 p.m. on March 19 and 8:30 a.m. on March 20 on the 1200 block of Judson Avenue.

 

Theft

Elimer Chabarro, 32, of Skokie was arrested and charged with theft at 10:15 a.m. on March 19 at the Evanston Police Station. His court date is set for May 3.

A man entered a business on the 1200 block of Chicago Avenue and stole money from the cash register at 4:30 p.m. on March 18. The thief was described as a 5-foot-8 black man in his 30s who weighed about 175 pounds.

A woman hung her purse on a chair at a business at 7:05 p.m. on March 18 on the 1500 block of Sherman Avenue, and it was stolen by a man with a big blue backpack. Police said the thief was described as a 5-foot-8 black man about 140 pounds in his 20s with a a thin build. He wore dark clothing.

A man set down a bag full of cash at 6:20 a.m. on March 20 on the 2200 block of Oakton Street. When he went to retrieve the bag at 7 a.m., it was gone.

An unknown offender entered an apartment and removed three Schwab checkbooks, two Fifth-Third bank checkbooks, a PNC checkbook and an address book between 5:30 p.m. on March 18 and noon on March 19 on the 1600 block of Chicago Avenue.

 

Criminal Damage to Property

Someone broke out the glass window of the door to a business on the 1900 block of Central Street between 7 p.m. on March 19 and 11:05 a.m. on March 20.

The windshield of a 1996 Nissan was smashed while it was parked in an alley on the 300 block of Custer Avenue at 9:19 p.m. on March 19.

The tires of a 1992 Toyota were slashed while it was parked in an alley on the 300 block of Callan Avenue between 8 p.m. on March 18 and 12:30 a.m. on March 19.

 

Driving under the Influence

Jeffrey A. Marshall, 33, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving under the influence at 12:27 a.m. on March 19 on the 900 block of Howard Street. His court date is set for March 29.

Adrian A. Renteria, 25, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving under the influence at 1:42 a.m. on March 19 on the 900 block of Dodge Avenue. A court date is set for April 28.

 

Disorderly Conduct

A 14-year-old and a 16-year-old Evanston resident were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct at 9:36 p.m. on March 19 on the 500 block of Dewey Avenue.

 

Domestic Battery

A 40-year-old Evanston man was arrested and charged with domestic battery at 1:07 a.m. on March 18 at the Evanston Police Station. His court date is set for March 23.

 

Open Container

Gail J. Athern, 46, of Highwood was arrested and charged with having an open alcohol container at 1 a.m. on March 19 on the 2200 block of Central Street. Her court date is set for April 11.

 

Possession of Spray Paint

Sran T. Frumkin, 18, of Evanston was arrested and charged with possession of spray paint for graffiti use at 9 a.m. on March 19 at the Best Western University Plaza on the 1500 block of Sherman Avenue. His court date is set for April 11.

Norberto Infante, 18, of Skokie was arrested and charged with possession of spray paint for graffiti use at 8:30 p.m. on March 19 on the 1300 block of Chicago Avenue. His court date is set for April 14.

 

Driving without a License

Keith A. Johnson, 29, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 4:36 p.m. on March 18 on the 1200 block of Fowler Avenue. His court date is set for April 28.

Michelle S. Miller, 23, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 1:55 p.m. on March 16 on the 1600 block of Pitner Avenue. Her court date is set for April 21.

Roberto Valenzuela, 31, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 1:05 a.m. on March 19 on the 2200 block of Emerson Street. His court date is set for April 4.

 

Shots Fired

A gun shot was heard during a disturbance at 2:53 a.m. on March 20 on the 700 block of Seward Avenue.

 

Graffiti

A fountain and traffic control box were vandalized with graffiti on the 1600 block of Sherman Avenue.

A water fountain was vandalized with a white marker on the 3200 block of Central Street.

Someone sprayed blue paint on a bridge wall on the 1100 block of Isabella Street in Wilmette.
