Police Blotter March 25: Burglar Caught in Act; Home Depot Employee Charged with Theft

A recap of crimes committed in Evanston.

The following items are taken from the Evanston Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

 

Burglary

An Evanston man was arrested after he was allegedly seen breaking into a car on Wednesday afternoon on the 800 block of Chicago Avenue. Police charged Odell Starling, 55, with burglary to auto at 2:20 p.m. A woman told police she saw Starling enter a co-worker's car on Chicago Avenue. Police said the owner of the car confronted Starling, who then kicked him in the shin before fleeing north on his bicycle. Police arrested Starling on the 700 block of Main Street. He was charged with battery and trespassing as well as a felony count of burglary. His court date is set for April 8.

Someone broke into a 2009 Honda and stole money between 9:15 p.m. on March 23 and 8 a.m. on March 24 on the 1700 block of Washington Street. The victim believes the burglar had car keys that had been stolen during a previous residential burglary.

A burglar used a pry tool to break into a 1997 Toyota and stole a Sony car stereo between 9:30 p.m. on March 23 and 2:40 p.m. on March 24 on the 400 block of Sherman Avenue.

Someone entered an unlocked 2009 Toyota and stole and Apple iPod music player and a power cord between 5:30 p.m. on March 23 and 8:10 a.m. on March 24 on the 1300 block of Monroe Street.

Someone broke into a 2000 Jeep and stole a Kenwood stereo faceplate and a Samsung cell phone chargers between 5 p.m. on March 23 and 8 a.m. on March 24. The Jeep was parked on the street on the 22oo block of Wesley Avenue.

 

Theft

A Home Depot employee was arrested after police said he illegally obtained store credit cards and used them for purchases between November and March. Rigoberto Sevilla, 44, of Chicago was arrested and charged with 10 counts of theft and retail theft at 1:50 p.m. on March 24 on the 2300 block of Oakton Street. Police said the 10 counts of theft added up to $72.70, with several of the purchases being less than $5. His court date is set for April 14.

A white 1993 Honda was stolen off the street on the 900 block of Grey Avenue between 8 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on March 24.

An acquaintance asked the owner of a 2007 Volkswagen if he could sit in the car at 2 p.m. on March 24 on the 1000 block of Chicago Avenue. The owner handed the keys to the acquaintance. The owner returned to the Volkswagen and got the keys back, but then later noticed a DVD navigation disc was missing. The acquaintance was described as a Middle Eastern man with black hair and brown eyes who stands about 5-foot-11 and weighs 200 pounds.

 

Vandalism

A 17-year-old Evanston resident was arrested and charged with criminal damage to property at 6:34 p.m. on March 24.

 

Trespassing

A 13-year-old Evanston resident was arrested and charged with trespassing at 4:40 p.m. on March 24 on the 300 block of Callan Avenue.

 

Marijuana Possession

Jemehl A. Davenport, 23, of Evanston was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana at 11:53 p.m. on March 24 on the 700 block of Mulford Street. His court date is set for April 28.

 

Driving without a License

Vijay Amin, 30, of Des Plaines was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 1:35 p.m. on March 24 on the 2100 block of Howard Street. His court date is set for April 14.

Cecelia E. Grady, 26, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 10:46 a.m. on March 24 on the 1100 block of Howard Street. Her court date is set for May 3.

Kimberly S. Williams, 21, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 12:04 a.m. on March 25 on the 1900 block of Dempster Street. Her court date is set for May 3.
