Police Blotter March 7: Downspout Thieves Strike Again; Woman Booted from Library

A recap of crimes committed in Evanston.

The following items are taken from the Evanston Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

 

Theft

Someone stole the aluminum downspout off a garage on the 900 block of Michigan Avenue between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m. on March 5. The downspout was worth $200 and painted a copper color.

Someone stole cash from a locked locker between 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. on March 5 on the 1600 block of Sherman Avenue.

A woman reported that she last saw her eyeglasses, cash and a box of notecards when she went to bed at 8:30 p.m. on March 5 at her home on the 3200 block of Grant Street. When she awoke at 7 a.m. on March 6, these items were gone.

 

Trespassing

A woman was arrested at the Evanston Public Library after police said she arrived drunk, became belligerent and refused to leave. Jenny B. Hameed, 38, of Chicago was arrested and charged with criminal trespassing at 3:10 p.m. on March 5 on the 1700 block of Orrington Avenue. Police said she was cussing loudly and interfering with other library patrons. Her court date is set for March 23.

 

Burglary

A 2009 Volkswagen was broken into on the 400 block of Sheridan Road and a Garmin GPS device was stolen between 11 p.m. on March 3 and 9 a.m. on March 4.

 

Fire Investigation

A 2002 Volkswagen caught fire at 1:08 a.m. on March 4 on the 600 block of Case Place.

 

Criminal Damage to Property

Someone came in a vacant apartment, dumped garbage all over and drew graffiti with a black marker all over the walls between Feb. 26 and March 5 on the 1900 block of Emerson Street.

The tires were slashed to a car parked on the 1200 block of Dewey Avenue between 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on March 4.

 

Drug Possession

John M. Johnstone, 55, of Evanston was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance at the Evanston Police Station at 3 p.m. on March 3. His court date is set for March 15.

 

Driving without a License

Miguel Castrejon, 22, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 7:09 p.m. on March 6 on the 900 block of Ashland Avenue. His court date is set for April 14.

Herschell A. Goff, 26, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 1:31 a.m. on March 5 on the 800 block of Oakton Street. His court date is set for April 14.

Atourina E. Kiryakoz, 19, of Skokie was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 5:45 p.m. on March 6 at the intersection of Oakton Street and Grey Avenue. Her court date is set for March 28.

Luis Loza, 44, of Skokie was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 6:35 p.m. on March 5 on the 2400 block of Dempster Street. His court date is set for April 14.

Eric J. Ruiz, 23, of Chicago was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 4:59 p.m. on March 6 on the 700 block of Howard Street. His court date is set for March 28.

Maria L. Salazar, 19, of Evanston was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license at 9:01 p.m. on March 3 on the 200 block of Chicago Avenue. Her court date is set for March 21.

 

Marijuana Possession

Diego Leon-Gomez, 18, of Evanston was arrested and charged with marijuana possession at 2:05 a.m. on March 4 on the 1800 block of Crain Street. His court date is set for April 11.

Michael Pomerantz, 20, of Winnetka was arrested and charged with marijuana possession at 11:15 p.m. on March 6 on the 2600 block of Asbury Avenue. His court date is set for April 11.

 

Graffiti

White paint was sprayed on a service door on March 6 on the 600 block of Oakton Avenue.
